It was later selected, with some controversy, to be the primary weapon for the Canadian Avro Arrow supersonic interceptor, along with the new Astra fire-control system.

The Avro Vulcan was part of the RAF V bomber force

The Avro Blue Steel was a British air-launched, rocket-propelled nuclear stand-off missile, built to arm the V bomber force.

The Ministry of Supply selected Avro out of the British manufacturers though it had no previous experience in working on guided weapons other than some private venture work ; Handley Page had suggested a missile but the Elliots gyro based guidance system was inaccurate beyond.

The project was delayed by the need to develop the stainless steel fabrication techniques ; this would have been gained in building the Avro 730 but that had been cancelled by then.

Each B-52H was to carry four missiles, two under each wing on side-by-side pylons, while the Avro Vulcan carried one each on smaller pylons.

Roe later founded the Avro aircraft company, which later built the acclaimed Avro Lancaster.

The BAe ATP ( Advanced Turbo Prop ) design evolved from the Avro 748 and examples continue in use on shorter, mainly domestic, scheduled air services.

Turbojet engines were trialled on piston engine airframes, such as the Avro Lancastrian and the Vickers VC. 1 Viking, the latter becoming the first jet engine passenger aircraft in April 1948.

Avro also built motor vehicles in the immediate post-World War 1 era.

Avro produced the three-wheeler Harper Runabout, and also their own light car, which was powered by a 1, 330 cc 4-cylinder engine.

Star Dust's last flight was the final leg of BSAA Flight CS59, which had started in London on an Avro York named Star Mist on 29 July 1947, landing in Buenos Aires on 1 August.

They mainly operated British Aerospace 146 aircraft on ad-hoc charters, and an Avro RJ100 regional jet with which they operated a regular service between Southend and Cologne from 7 June 2006 to 1 December 2008 on behalf of Ford Motor Company as a corporate shuttle.

It was reformed on 17 November 1947, flying Avro York C. 1 transport aircraft, but again disbanded on 31 August 1949.

May 1973 saw the arrival of the Jaguar Conversion Team ( renamed 226 Operational Conversion Unit on 1 October 1974 ) and in August 1973, 8 Squadron Avro Shackleton transferred to Lossiemouth from nearby Kinloss.

101 Squadron reformed at Brize Norton on 1 May 1984, it previously operated the Avro Vulcan and participated in the Operation Black Buck missions of the Falklands War.

* March 24 – Five Royal Naval Air Service Avro 504s of No. 1 Squadron bomb the German submarine depot at Hoboken in Antwerp, Belgium, starting a fire in the shipyard that destroys two German submarines.

* May 25 – A Dan-Air Avro 685 York C. 1 cargo aircraft suffers an in-flight engine fire and crashes during a forced landing near Gurgaon, Haryana, India, killing four members of the five-person crew.

* July 10 – A Skyways Coach-Air Avro 748-101 Series 1 lands heavily on a grass runway at Lympne Airport, Kent, England, digs in its nose wheel, overturns, and crashes, losing both wings and its starboard tailplane.

Reformed at RAF Scampton on 1 May 1958 as part of RAF Bomber Command's V-bomber force maintaining the UK's strategic nuclear deterrent, the squadron was equipped with the Avro Vulcan B1 from Aug 1960.
