Béla Hamvas ( 23 March 1897 – 7 November 1968 ) was a Hungarian writer, philosopher, and social critic.

Béla Hamvas was born in 23 March 1897 in Eperjes ( Prešov ).

One view is that the anonymous notary of the Hungarian king Béla III ( 1172 – 1196 ) wrote in the Gesta Ungarorum, based on ancient chronicles and oral tradition, that the Magyars, when they settled on the plains of the Tisza and Danube rivers, found there “ Slavs, Bulgarians and Vlachs, and the shepherds of the Romans ” Although the Gesta Ungarorum is in sharp contrast with the chronicle of Simon of Kéza and of other 14th century chronicles, it is a mistake to treat Gelou as a purely fictional character whose name derived from that of the Transylvanian town Gilău ( Gyalu in Hungarian ) Moreover, it would make no sense for the author of the Gesta to invent entire populations or to lie about the situation.

The Béla Bartók Music Institute, which became a faculty of the university in 1997, can be found in the downtown, in the so-called Palace of Music.

Béla also entrusted the Jews with the mint ; and Hebrew coins of this period are still found in Hungary.

The direct predecessor of the current coat of arms of Slovakia can be found in the coat of arms used by Béla, the prince of the Nitrian frontier principality ( 1046 – 1060 ) and later the king of the Kingdom of Hungary.

The piano concerto form survived through the 20th century into the 21st, with examples being written by Arnold Schoenberg, Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Nikolai Medtner, Alexander Tcherepnin, Maurice Ravel, George Gershwin, Michael Tippett, Charles Wuorinen, York Bowen, Frank Martin, Bohuslav Martinů, Peter Mieg, Heinrich Sutermeister, Dmitri Shostakovich, Samuel Barber, Witold Lutosławski, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Peter Mennin, György Ligeti, Elliott Carter, Selim Palmgren, Leroy Anderson, and others.

Béla Bartók is noted for his use of arch form, e. g., in his Fourth and Fifth string quartets, Concerto for Orchestra, Second Piano Concerto, and, to a lesser extent, in his Second Violin Concerto ( ibid ).

Cyclic tonal progressions in the works of Romantic composers such as Gustav Mahler and Richard Wagner form a link with the cyclic pitch successions in the atonal music of Modernists such as Béla Bartók, Alexander Scriabin, Edgard Varèse, and the Second Viennese School ( Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern ).

A gypsy fortuneteller named Maleva ( Maria Ouspenskaya ) reveals to Larry that the animal which bit him was actually her son Bela ( Béla Lugosi ) in the form of a wolf.

On learning that Béla IV had given his daughter in marriage to his son, Rostislav Mikhailovich ( who had fled to the Hungarians ) in 1242, Mikhail believed that his efforts to form an alliance with the Árpád dynasty had finally been realized.

Béla Bartók died at age 64 in a hospital in New York City from complications of leukemia ( specifically, of secondary polycythemia ) on September 26, 1945.

Upon its 1938 re-release, the names of co-writer Béla Balázs and producer Harry Sokal, both Jewish, were removed from the credits ; some reports claim this was at Riefenstahl ’ s behest.

In 20th-century classical music, written at a time when the use of vibrato was widespread, there is sometimes a specific instruction not to use it ( in some of the string quartets of Béla Bartók for example ).

After the siege of Pest Batu's army withdrew to the Sajo River where they inflicted the tremendous defeat on King Béla IV and his allies at the Battle of Mohi on April 11.

Additionally, in 1932, at the Cairo Congress of Arab Music held in Cairo, Egypt-and attended by such Western luminaries as Béla Bartók and Henry George Farmer-experiments were done which determined conclusively that the notes in actual use differ substantially from an even-tempered 24-tone scale.

* Béla Bartók ( 1881 – 1945 ), composer and pianist, lived at 3242 Cambridge Avenue.

Having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College, Cambridge, he proceeded to a doctoral degree at the University of Memphis, where, working with respected graph theorist Béla Bollobás, he presented a possible solution of the reconstruction problem for abelian groups, including the necklace problem.

According to a charter issued by Béla IV of Hungary for the Knights Hospitallers in 1247, at that time at least four polities existed in the area to the south of the Carpathians.
