Jacques Villeneuve has appeared in various TV commercials for Honda when he was driving for the BAR team.

BAR was sold to Honda in 2005.

Consequently BAR Honda became the Honda team for the 2006 Formula One season.

During the 1999 season BAR announced that Honda was to supply them with engines beginning in 2000.

BAR did not have exclusive use of Honda engines, though, as Jordan Grand Prix were using Mugen Honda units.

This prompted a battle between BAR and Jordan for the use of Honda engines in the long term.

In 2000 the new Honda powered BAR did show a significant improvement.

In mid-November 2004, BAR announced that Honda had purchased 45 % and, as part of the deal, David Richards left to be replaced by Nick Fry as team principal.

Just as they became competitive, in San Marino, BAR Honda was disqualified for running with illegal cars.

At the end of 2005 Honda obtained 100 % ownership of BAR from British American Tobacco, completing their ambition to become a full F1 manufacturer team.

In 2004 BAR announced that technology partner Honda had purchased a 45 % stake and in September 2005 it announced that Honda would be buying the remaining 55 % stake.

Button's management argued that the BAR option was not valid because it contained a clause allowing him to leave if BAR risked losing their Honda engines.

They felt the new contract signed in the summer for Honda to supply engines to BAR was not definitive, and thus Button was free to move.

Two of the men at the centre of the dispute were soon removed from their positions: team principal David Richards was replaced by Nick Fry after Honda bought 45 percent of the BAR business ; and Button separated from his manager John Byfield, saying he had been badly advised.

In October, Honda bought the remaining 55 percent of BAR from British American Tobacco, renaming the team Honda Racing F1 ; Button said at the time, " Honda buying the team is amazing news and really shows their commitment to winning the world championship ".

Away from the track, the BAR Honda team used a modified BAR 007 car, which they claim complied with FIA Formula One regulations, to set an unofficial speed record of 413 km / h ( 257 mph ) on a one way straight line run on 6 November 2005 during a shakedown ahead of their Bonneville 400 record attempt.

He was involved with tobacco giant British American Tobacco's Formula One team British American Racing and has attended Grands Prix in support of the BAR team.

The team was still officially known as Tyrrell in 1998, before it became BAR the following year.

BAR had the slogan ' A tradition of excellence ' which made pundits chuckle as the team had no history and therefore no tradition to be excellent.

The BAR 002 brought the team its first points at the 2000 Australian Grand Prix.

BAR signed a deal to become Honda's only team in 2003, despite finishing behind Honda's other team, Jordan, in both 2001 and 2002.

BAR finished the season in 2nd place in the Constructors ' Championship, beating every team except for Ferrari.

When BAR returned at the European Grand Prix the team struggled to find its feet.

The team raced as Tyrrell for the 1998 season before being renamed as British American Racing ( BAR ).

An important factor in his decision was the chance to work with David Richards, the BAR team principal.

The dispute went to Formula One's Contract Recognition Board, who ruled in favour of BAR on 20 October, forcing Button to stay with the team.

The constructors championship underlined Ferrari's incredible early dominance, with the Italian team on 64, over double the score of second-placed Renault, on 31, followed by both WilliamsF1 and BAR on 27.

Williams, Renault and BAR gathered points together, while McLaren, a team that had enjoyed success in years preceding this, only managed one point, with David Coulthard finishing a lapped 8th.

His team-mate Rubens Barrichello completed a 1-2 for the team, whilst Jenson Button completed the podium for the BAR team by finishing in third position.

Button had signed a pre-contract to drive for Williams in 2006, but he now believed his prospects would be better at BAR, and that his Williams contract was not binding.

The car, badged as a Honda following their takeover of BAR at the end of 2005, set an FIA ratified record of on a one way run on 21 July 2006 at Bonneville Salt Flats.

The project was subsequently discontinued, although Honda began supplying engines again from the 2000 season onwards, eventually taking over the BAR team for 2006.

The start of the 2005 season didn't go according to plan for BAR, as they struggled in the " flyaway " races at the start of the season.

In stark contrast to the previous season, BAR failed to score a single point until the midway point, at the 2005 French Grand Prix.

Takuma Sato had a particularly poor season, scoring just one point, and subsequently, his contract was not renewed by BAR at the end of the season.

Just before the final race in Japan, Villeneuve lost his seat at BAR, so Button was partnered with Takuma Sato ; he took his second fourth place for the season, and finished ninth in the Drivers ' Championship with 17 points.

Returning at the, BAR were still struggling and Button finished tenth.

The forced withdrawal of all teams using Michelin tyres, including BAR, at the controversial, meant Button and Sato were still yet to score points after nine races of a 19-race season.
