On May 12, 2009, New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine and the Delaware River Port Authority, the agency which manages the PATCO Speedline, announced plans for a Camden-Philadelphia BRT ( bus rapid transit system ) along the Route 42 freeway and the adjacent Route 55 freeway as part of a comprehensive transportation plan for South Jersey that would include a diesel light rail line between Camden and Glassboro, improvements to the Atlantic City Line, and enhanced connections to the Atlantic City International Airport.

Currently, a bus rapid transit (" BRT ") line is being planned for Geary Boulevard, possibly as a precursor to a light rail line.

The Northwest Line towards Cobb County has a stub tunnel east of Atlantic Station, but that redevelopment has not been built with a MARTA station in mind, and Cobb County would instead most likely get a light rail or commuter rail system ( either of which have been studied ) or a bus rapid transit service ( see Northwest Corridor HOV / BRT ).

Typical transit speeds of BRT systems range from, which can compare with surface running light rail.

In Latin America and cities in Asia, the BRT service is usually compared to metro-quality rail, and normally results in consistently similar enclosed stations featuring smartcard turnstiles and level-platform boarding.

In North America, the BRT is usually compared to LRT-quality rail, and typically results in open-air shelters with ticket-dispenser machines, or even just curbside signposts difficult to distinguish from other roadside visual clutter.

Proponents of light rail point out that the operating costs of BRT are not necessarily lower than light rail.

The typically larger light rail vehicles enjoy reduced labor costs per passenger, and the unit capital cost per passenger can be lower than a BRT system.

In contrast to BRT, light rail and tram systems require the placement of rails for the entire line.

Running a BRT system is much less expensive than running a light rail system.

Funding for the Green Line extension is still years from being secured but includes an option to extend it as light rail or BRT from Johns Hopkins Hospital.

* The Sound Transit 2 proposal would add a Bus Rapid Transit ( BRT ) line to the entire SR-520 corridor, and a light rail extension joining the corridor in the vicinity of Overlake, continuing to the Overlake Transit Center on the Microsoft campus.

An integrated hub-and-spoke system of services is available consisting of: ( 1 ) regular buses travelling on fixed routes in mixed traffic, typical of most urban transit systems ; ( 2 ) a bus rapid transit ( BRT ) system — a high frequency bus service operating on the transitway — a network of mostly grade-separated dedicated bus lanes within their own right-of-way and having full stations with Park & Ride facilities further supported by on-road reserved bus lanes and priority traffic signal controls ; ( 3 ) a light rail transit ( LRT ) system known as the O-Train operating on one north-south route ; and ( 4 ) a door-to-door bus service for the disabled known as ParaTranspo.

However, the current rapid bus service by VTA does not fully qualify as BRT, due to the lack of separate ticketing stations and platforms, distinctive vehicles, and special lanes ( which make BRT mimic more of a light rail or tram route, instead of a bus route ).

VTA plans to add distinctive vehicles, separate bus-exclusive lanes on Alum Rock Avenue, El Camino Real, and Stevens Creek Road, ticketing platforms separate from other buses, and possible amentities such as wait time for successive BRT buses by 2016 ( making BRT behave more like a light rail or tram system, instead of bus service ).

Previously, the BRT had only provided passenger rail service on elevated or surface routes.

The city also saw other transportation projects, including improvement and expansion to its mass transit system, notably to its commuter rail system to southeastern Massachusetts and the development of a bus rapid transit ( BRT ) system dubbed " The Silver Line.

All of the above characteristics were noted as features of Bogotá's TransMilenio, described as a " model BRT system " in the National Bus Rapid Transit Institute's May 2006 report.

In the NBRTI's May 2006 report, average headways of 13 seconds at busy intersections were observed in the TransMilenio BRT system.

The costs of a running a BRT system is about $ 13. 49 a mile and the total cost for a year of expenditure is $ 987. 80 according to a study done by the GAO.

BRT, however, uses buses on a wide variety of rights-of-way, including mixed traffic, dedicated lanes on surface streets, and busways completely separated from traffic.

BRT systems come in a variety of forms, such as dedicated busways with their own rights-of-way ( such as Ottawa's Transitway or Pittsburgh's Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway ), bus services using HOV lanes, dedicated freeway lanes ( such as Honolulu's CityExpress ) and limited stop buses on pre-existing routes.

When available, the dedicated right-of-way lanes of BRT systems allow them an increased average vehicle speed bypassing traffic congestion, to provide more passenger miles with the same number of vehicles and personnel than conventional bus services.

But when compared to normal bus service in mixed traffic, addition of BRT dedicated lanes requires wider roads or reduction of mixed traffic lanes.

Many BRT systems, such as Ottawa's OC Transpo and Brisbane's South-East Busway, are based on multiple bus routes sharing a common dedicated busway to bypass congestion, especially to / from a central business district.

With the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit ( BRT ) and the development of dedicated corridors for the service, bus service is set to improve.
