He and Widor collaborated on a new edition of Bach's organ works, with detailed analysis of each work in three languages ( English, French, German ).

" In response to these accusations of anti-Semitism, composer and Oberlin College professor Conrad Cummings wrote a letter to the editor defending " Klinghoffer " as " the closest analogue to the experience of Bach's audience attending his most demanding works ," and noted that, as someone of half-Jewish heritage, he " found nothing anti-Semitic about the work.

This musical work, while touted as " P. D. Q. Bach's Half-Act Opera: The Stoned Guest ," is actually the work of Peter Schickele.

The Mass was most probably never performed in totality during Bach's lifetime, and the work largely disappeared in the 18th century.

Instead, Johann Adolph Hasse's Mass in D minor was performed, a work with many similarities to Bach's Mass ( the Credo movements in both works feature chant over a walking bass line, for example.

Alberto Basso summarizes the work as follows: " The Mass in B minor is the consecration of a whole life: started in 1733 for ' diplomatic ' reasons, it was finished in the very last years of Bach's life, when he had already gone blind.

Bach scholar Christoph Wolff describes the work as representing " a summary of his writing for voice, not only in its variety of styles, compositional devices, and range of sonorities, but also in its high level of technical polish ... Bach's mighty setting preserved the musical and artistic creed of its creator for posterity.

Pachelbel's work also may have been the inspiration behind Bach's fugue subject.

Although Johann Sebastian Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach claimed that his father admired and studied Bruhns ' work, no direct influence has been traced by scholars.

It is unknown exactly when the work was composed, but copies dated 1730 suggest it may have been composed later than the other two concertos for violin, perhaps during Bach's time as director of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig.

P. D. Q. Bach's work pokes fun at musical genres including Baroque, Romantic, modern, country music ( Oedipus Tex and Blaues Gras ), and rap ( Classical Rap ).

The film of his rehearsal of his edition of Bach's The Art of Fugue with the CBC Toronto Chamber Orchestra shows him using a baton throughout, and very effectively.

Nevertheless he applied himself diligently to the study of Bach's fugues under Morris, a discipline which enabled him to write fugally with confident mastery.

Apart from the trio sonata, which is written for flute, violin and basso continuo, the pieces have few indications of which instruments are meant to play them, although there is now significant support for the idea that they are for solo keyboard, like most of Bach's other published works.

He also wrote the first biography of Bach ( in 1802 ), one which is of particular value today, as he was still able to correspond directly with Bach's sons Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, and thereby obtained much valuable information that would otherwise have been lost.

Possibly the cantata was heard a few weeks later after the end of Lent, and thus it may have formed a test-piece for the Muhlhausen appointment, composed in Arnstadt with Bach's supporter Meckbach in mind.

In some cases Picander / Henrici's texts have survived and Bach's settings have not.

Scholars have suggested that the Mass in B minor belongs in the same category as the Art of Fugue, as a summation of Bach's deep lifelong involvement with musical tradition — in this case, with choral settings and theology.

Some of the greatest compositions in the genre have unique common names other than Missa solemnis, namely Bach's Mass in B minor and Mozart's Great Mass in C minor.

On first sight of a score, it was not unusual for her draw comparisons from a variety of composers: " these measures have the same harmonic progressions as Bach's F major prelude and Chopin's F major Ballade.

Many of Bach's manuscripts have been preserved in Kirnberger's library ( the " Kirnberger collection ").
