Bakshi and background artist Johnnie Vita soon headed to Toronto, planning to commute between Canada and New York, with artists such as Morrow and Wood working from the United States.

Bakshi hired animators he had worked with in the past, including Vita, Tyer, Anzilotti and Nick Tafuri, and began the layouts and animation.

Bakshi and Vita walked around the Lower East Side, Washington Square Park, Chinatown and Harlem, taking moody snapshots.

Initial reviews were negative ; Playboy commented that " Bakshi seems to throw in a little of everything and he can't quite pull it together.

Bakshi and Frazetta were heavily involved in the production of the live-action sequences, from casting sessions to the final shoot.

United Artists and Paramount Pictures each paid Bakshi to develop the film in the 1970s, but were unwilling to produce it, as were the studios he pitched the film to in the 1980s.

A number of memorable animated videos were produced during the heyday of MTV, including " Take on Me " by a-ha ; " Sledgehammer " by Peter Gabriel ; " Money for Nothing " by Dire Straits ; and " The Harlem Shuffle " by The Rolling Stones ( the animated sequences in this video were directed by Ralph Bakshi and John Kricfalusi ).

Bakshi and Crumb were unable reach an agreement after two weeks of negotiations but Krantz secured the film rights from Crumb's wife, Dana, who had a power of attorney.

Bakshi also provided fans with the first origin story for the character ever presented on TV, the aptly titled " The Origin of Spider-Man ," which used entire chunks of Stan Lee's dialogue, not from the hero's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy # 15, published in August 1962, but instead from a drastically updated retelling in Spectacular Spider-Man # 1, titled " In the Beginning ," which was published in July 1968, only a few months before the episode was aired.

In an episode of Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, also produced by Bakshi, the Mighty Heroes retired and became accountants with a firm called " Man, Man, Man, Man & Man.

" Bakshi also worked with Gordone on the film Heavy Traffic, and worked with Thomas again on the film Hey Good Lookin '.

" Bakshi has also stated " The art of cartooning is vulgarity.

The film also uses live-action photographs and footage as backdrops for animated sequences, a filmmaking technique Bakshi previously employed in Heavy Traffic.

According to Bakshi, Richard Pryor was also a supporter of the film.

" James ' book also states that Bakshi wanted to work with Pryor on a live-action / animated film based on Pryor's stand-up comedy.
