In 1861, to supplement his income, the younger Gilbert began writing illustrated stories, poems and articles of his own, many of which would later be mined as inspiration for his plays and operas, particularly Gilbert's series of illustrated poems, the Bab Ballads.

Waits wrote the following introduction for the Tompkins Square compilation People Take Warning – Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs, 1913 – 1938:

Up to this point Wordsworth was known publicly only for Lyrical Ballads, and he hoped this collection would cement his reputation.

Chapter XIV describes the preparations with Wordsworth for their revolutionary collaboration Lyrical Ballads ( first edition 1798 ), for which Coleridge had contributed the more romantic, Gothic pieces including The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

For the second class, subjects were to be chosen from ordinary life ... In this idea originated the plan of the ' Lyrical Ballads '; in which it was agreed, that my endeavours should be directed to persons and characters supernatural, or at least Romantic ; yet so as to transfer from our inward nature a human interest and a semblance of truth sufficient to procure for these shadows of imagination that willing suspension of disbelief for the moment, which constitutes poetic faith.

Edward Guiliano even believes that a case can be made for a direct influence of Gilbert's Bab Ballads on the Snark, based on the fact that Carroll was well acquainted with the comic writing and the theatre of his age.

According to his biographers, Dark and Grey, Gilbert also drew on some of his earlier verse, the Bab Ballads for some plot elements.

Among his best-known early works are the illustrations he produced for The Book of British Ballads ( 1842 ), and a frontispiece he designed for The Kentish Coronal ( 1840 ).

" Roll On, Columbia, Roll On " was part of the Columbia River Ballads, a set of twenty-six songs written by Guthrie as part of a commission by the Bonneville Power Administration ( BPA ), the federal agency created to sell and distribute power from the river's federal hydroelectric facilities ( primarily Bonneville Dam and Grand Coulee Dam ).

Most writers have accepted as " Bab Ballads " any poetry ( whether illustrated or not ) that Gilbert contributed to periodicals, not counting poems written or repurposed as operatic lyrics.

" El Paso " is a country and western ballad written and originally recorded by Marty Robbins, and first released on Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in September 1959.

In English literature the decline of the periodic sentence's popularity goes hand in hand with the development toward a less formal style, which some authors date to the beginning of the Romantic period, specifically the 1798 publication of the Lyrical Ballads, and the prevalence in twentieth-century literature of spoken language over written language.
