It became the expectation — rather than the exception — that those in the public eye should write about themselves — not only writers such as Charles Dickens ( who also incorporated autobiographical elements in his novels ) and Anthony Trollope, but also politicians ( e. g. Henry Brooks Adams ), philosophers ( e. g. John Stuart Mill ), churchmen such as Cardinal Newman, and entertainers such as P. T. Barnum.

The United Center has also provided a Chicago home for Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus and Disney on Ice.

It also hosted many other minor league sports teams, as well as various concerts and other events such as the PlayStation Pro event on the Dew Action Sports Tour and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus annually.

In 1907 the brothers purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus and ran the two circuses separately until they merged them into one unit in 1919, when they also moved the winter quarters to Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Currently, the BI-LO Center also regularly hosts a wide variety of events such as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, professional wrestling, monster truck rallies, motocross racing, professional ice skating, such as the Champions on Ice, and ice dancing shows and competitions, dog shows and concerts spanning many different musical genres.

Also, with nearly fifteen hundred graduates, many of whom were teaching others the lessons they had learned, and with a home videotape produced by Ringling and made at Clown College in 1986 titled " Be A Clown ," which featured many of the techniques used in the school's training sessions, Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus officially discontinued their Clown College just shy of its 30th year.

In 1968, they played as part of the Barnum and Bailey Light Circus, a sound and light show that was produced by two college professors, and which was performed at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art.
