The 1983 Barun Valley discoveries prompted three years of research on the ' tree bear ' possibility by Taylor, Fleming, John Craighead and Tirtha Shrestha.

This fieldwork in Nepal ’ s Barun Valley led directly to initiating in 1984 Makalu-Barun National Park that protected over half a million acres in 1991, and across the border with China the Qomolangma national nature preserve in the Tibet Autonomous Region that protected over six million acres.

The only known species is Nessovbaatar multicostatus ( Kielan-Jaworowska & Hurum 1997 ), fossils of which were found in the Upper Cretaceous Barun Goyot Formation of Mongolia.

The genus Nemegtbaatar ( Kielan-Jaworowska Z., 1974 ) is known by the species Nemegtbaatar gobiensis found in the Campanian ( Upper Cretaceous ) Barun Goyot Formation of Mongolia.

But no specimen has been recorded in the country, until in May 2009 a camera trap survey yielded the first photographic record of a melanistic Asian golden cat in Makalu Barun National Park at an altitude of.

This valley lies entirely inside the Makalu Barun National Park.
