Saint Basil's Cathedral on the Red Square, Moscow

On May 28, 1987, a West German pilot named Mathias Rust landed a light aircraft on St Basil's descent next to Red Square, causing a major scandal in the Soviet Air Defence Forces.

The Cathedral of the Protection of Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat () or Pokrovsky Cathedral ()-both are official names used by the Russian Orthodox Church-also known as the Cathedral of St. Vasily the Blessed but popularly as Saint Basil's Cathedral (), is a Russian Orthodox church erected on Red Square in Moscow in 1555 – 61 on orders from Ivan the Terrible.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg feature such world-renown museums as Hermitage and Tretyakov Gallery, famous theaters like Bolshoi and Mariinsky, ornate churches like Saint Basil's Cathedral, Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Saint Isaac's Cathedral and Church of the Savior on Blood, impressive fortifications like Moscow Kremlin and Peter and Paul Fortress, beautiful squares like Red Square and Palace Square, and streets like Tverskaya and Nevsky Prospect.

The Anglican Church celebrates Saint Basil's feast on January 2, but the Episcopal Church celebrates it on June 14.
