Bastia (, ) is a commune in the Haute-Corse department of France located in the northeast of the island of Corsica at the base of Cap Corse.

Located in the North-East of Corsica at the base of the Cap Corse, between the sea and the mountain, Bastia is the principal port of the island.

In terms of geography, Bastia is defined by its position between the sea and the mountain.

Above all, Bastia is a port, and the sea has of course a significant role in the spatial organization of the city.

Thus, Bastia is logically organized on a relatively narrow North-South axis which can make access to the city center difficult under particular circumstances.

The main road to Bastia is the RN 193.

Bastia's train station, which belongs to Corsican Railways, is situated in the city center and connects Bastia with Ajaccio and Calvi.

In terms of passengers, Bastia is the first French port of the Mediterranean with more than 2. 4 million passengers in 2007.

The Bastia – Poretta Airport is located 16 km south of the city, in the town of Lucciana.

It is the fourth-largest commune in Corsica ( after Ajaccio, Bastia, and Porto-Vecchio ).

Corte is also linked to Ajaccio, Bastia and Calvi by the Chemin de fer de la Corse ( Corsican Railway ), and is served by trains running between Ajaccio and Calvi, and Ajaccio and Bastia.

The Chiascio basin is relatively uninhabited as far as Bastia Umbra.

From Bastia, the journey is 4 hours, 45 minutes on conventional ferries and 3 hours, 40 minutes on express ferries, while from Calvi, conventional vessels take 3 hours, 45 minutes and express vessels take 2 hours, 45 minutes.

Sporting Club de Bastia ( commonly referred to as SC Bastia or simply Bastia ) is a French association football club based in Bastia on the island of Corsica.

Bastia is managed by Frédéric Hantz and captained by midfielder Yannick Cahuzac.

Bastia is owned by Pierre-Marie Geronimi, a French entrepreneur, and has been since 2011.

* September 20 – 21 ( overnight ) – To disrupt the German evacuation of Corsica, Allied Northwest African Air Force Wellington, Mitchell, and Liberator bombers begin strikes against airfields, shipping, and port facilities at Bastia, Corsica, and Leghorn and Pisa, Italy.

* September 21 – 22 ( overnight ) – A Northwest African Air Force raid on Bastia damages the port enough to slow the German evacuation of Corsica.

Paoli took most of the island for the republic but he was unable to force Genoese troops out of the citadels of Saint-Florent, Calvi, Ajaccio, Bastia and Algajola.
