In the 2004 semi-sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Batou and Motoko / 2501 briefly reunite towards the end of the film.
Particularly in Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Batou also appears moderately distant and possibly bitter.

Batou and which
Batou gives her a car which has " 2501 " as the access code, which the Major suggests can be their private identification code for the next time they meet.
Also, as Batou treats them as individuals as opposed to interchangeable units, they begin to view themselves as such, which contributes to the development of their AI.
The name " Batou " also means " eight-headed " in Mandarin Chinese, which is significant since " Kusanagi " was the name of a sword that was taken from Orochi, an eight-headed and eight-tailed sea dragon in Japanese mythology.

Batou and Major
* Many of the members of Section 9 in the Ghost in the Shell universe, specifically the main characters Major Motoko Kusanagi and Batou, are cyborgs dependent on regular maintenance ; there are several manga ( or graphic novel ) and artbooks set in the GitS universe, as well as two feature-length anime films, three television series and three video games.
The Major agrees to the merger just before Section 6 helicopter snipers destroy the shell and severely damage Batou and the Major.
In another scene, after having rescued a little girl, Batou asks the Major if she considers herself " happy ".
Throughout the film, the Major makes her first " true " appearance in Kim's manor, where she breaks into the hallway component of Kim's looping false memories and inserts herself ( represented by the little girl prosthetic body she inhabited at the end of the first movie ), providing clues to alert Batou to Kim's attempted ghost-hack on himself and Togusa.
When the Tachikoma sacrificed themselves to save Batou, Major Kusanagi understands that she was wrong in halting the usage of the Tachikoma and proposes that they might have evolved to have ghosts themselves.
During finale of the first S. A. C season, while all but three of the Tachikomas are either locked away in a lab or dismantled for study, three surviving Tachikoma units abandon their civilian posts to assist the Major and Batou.
Unlike the Major, Batou often expresses his anger at injustice and cruelty quite openly.
At times, Batou acts as a voice of reason and displays great concern for the Major, and she in turn admits that she can confide in him.
