The vegetable people grow what Baum elsewhere calls " meat people ," apparently for food ; Neill's pictures show plants with the heads of human children being watered by their growers.

As Newman, the driver was getting out, Nelson, apparently detecting a suspicious movement, opened fire with a custom-converted machine gun pistol, severely wounding Christensen and Newman and killing Baum, shot three times in the neck.

While some fans enjoy trying to explain the various inconsistencies in the books, others prefer to ignore them, since apparently the inconsistencies were not important to Baum himself.

She emphasized humor to a greater extent than Baum did, and always considered her work for children, whereas Baum, while first and foremost considering his child audience, knew that his readership comprised all ages.

They state that Baum and Denslow did not simply invent the Lion, Tin Woodman, Scarecrow, Yellow Brick Road, Silver Slippers, cyclone, monkeys, Emerald City, little people, Uncle Henry, passenger balloons, witches and the wizard.

Baum, indeed, never used the color schema consistently ; in many books, he alluded to the colors to orient the characters and readers to their location, and then did not refer to it again.

Despite this continual evasion, the barrier itself remained ; nowhere in any Oz book did Baum hint that the inhabitants were even considering removing the magical barrier.

Although Baum did not often use the word " mortal ," Thompson seemed far more fond of it as a way of describing the people who had come to Oz from the great outside world.

Baum tended to capitalize the word " Witch " when referring to the Witches of the North, South, East or West, but did not do so when referring to witches in general.

In literature, certain authors also engage in crossovers by including characters from different novels they have written in one particular volume ; L. Frank Baum did this regularly, and Michael Moorcock frequently uses this device-particularly in his Eternal Champion sequence of novels, which establish a vast ' multiverse ' populated by numerous different characters, many of whom appear in different novels and even different genres.

These editorials are the only known occasions on which Baum articulated such views.

Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll ), was ever published.
