Helen Beatrix Potter ( 28 July 186622 December 1943 ) was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist best known for her imaginative children ’ s books featuring animals such as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit which celebrated the British landscape and country life.

Summer holidays were spent in Scotland and in the English Lake District where Beatrix developed a love of the natural world which was the subject of her painting from an early age.

They lived comfortably at 2 Bolton Gardens, South Kensington, where Helen Beatrix was born on 28 July 1866 and her brother Walter Bertram on 14 March 1872.

Quite the contrary, Beatrix was devoted to the care of her small animals, often taking them with her on long holidays.

For most of the first fifteen years of her life, Beatrix spent summer holidays at Dalguise, an estate on the River Tay in Perthshire, Scotland.

As a result, Beatrix came to meet Hardwicke Rawnsley, incumbent vicar at Wray and later the founding secretary of the National Trust, whose interest in the countryside and country life inspired the same in Beatrix and who was to have a lasting impact on her life.

Rebuffed by William Thiselton-Dyer, the Director at Kew, because of her gender and her amateur status, Beatrix wrote up her conclusions and submitted a paper On the Germination of the Spores of the Agaricineae to the Linnean Society in 1897.

Her Journal reveals her growing sophistication as a critic as well as the influence of her father ’ s friend the artist Sir John Everett Millais who recognised Beatrix ’ s talent of observation.

As a way to earn a bit of money in the 1890s, Beatrix and her brother began to print Christmas cards of their own design, as well as cards for special occasions.

By the summer of 1912 Heelis had proposed marriage and Beatrix had accepted, although she did not immediately tell her parents who once again disapproved because Heelis was only a country solicitor.

Hill Top Farm was opened to the public by the National Trust in 1946 ; her artwork was displayed there until 1985 when it was moved to William Heelis ’ s former law offices in Hawkshead, also owned by the National Trust as the Beatrix Potter Gallery.

Potter ’ s work as a scientific illustrator and her work in mycology is highlighted in several chapters in Linda Lear, Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature, 2007 ; Beatrix Potter: The Extraordinary Life of a Victorian Genius.

In The Tale of Little Pig Robinson, Beatrix Potter directs the reader to Robinson Crusoe for a detailed description of the island ( the land of the Bong tree ) to which her eponymous hero moves.

She demonstrated an independent streak and a willingness to use factional Scottish politics in her conflicts with James over the custody of Prince Henry and his treatment of her friend Beatrix Ruthven.

The so-called Gowrie conspiracy of 1600, in which the young Earl of Gowrie, John Ruthven, and his brother Alexander Ruthven were killed by James's attendants for a supposed assault on the King, triggered the dismissal of their sisters Beatrix and Barbara Ruthven as ladies-in-waiting to Anne, with whom they were " in chiefest credit.

The fourth child of journalist Rudolph Lehmann, and brother of Helen Lehmann, novelist Rosamond Lehmann and actress Beatrix Lehmann, he was educated at Eton and read English at Trinity College, Cambridge.

His mother Margaret Douglas, and aunts Elizabeth Douglas ( the wife of Regent Morton ) and Janet or Beatrix Douglas wife of Lord Maxwell, his sister Anne ( mother of the Earl of Huntly ), and youngest brother David were all also affected by mental ill-health.

Dynastically, he established two notable Capetian Houses: the House of Anjou ( which he created by bestowing the County of Anjou upon his brother, Charles ( 1227 – 1285 )), and the House of Bourbon ( which he established by bestowing Clermont on his son Robert ( 1256 – 1317 ) in 1268, before marrying the young man to the heiress of Bourbon, Beatrix ( 1257 – 1310 )); the first House would go on to rule Sicily, Naples, and Hungary, suffering many tragedies and disasters on the way ; the second would eventually succeed to the French thone, collecting Navarre along the way.

When in exile after reporting her father's act, Beatrix's older brother Giacomo convinces Beatrix to kill her father.

In November 1960 Christian Heinrich, being the divorced father of three daughters by his dynastic marriage to Beatrix Grafin von Bismarck-Schönhausen ( 1921-2006 ), married Dagmar Prinzessin zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein ( 1919-2002 ), elder daughter of his adopted father's younger brother, Georg, who died seven months before the wedding.

Daughter Mary Binney Cadwalader ( 1829 – 1861 ) married William Henry Rawle ( 1823 – 1889 ) in 1849 ; their daughter Mary Cadwalader Rawle ( 1850 – 1923 ) married Frederick Rhinelander Jones on March 24, 1870, who was the brother of Edith Wharton ( 1862 – 1937 ); their daughter in turn was landscape architect Beatrix Cadwalader Jones Farrand ( 1872 – 1959 ).

She and Beatrix remained friends throughout their lives and Annie's eight children were the recipients of many of Potter ’ s delightful picture letters.

The headquarters were officially opened by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands on 20 May 1998 and consist of an eight-story building built in a semi-circle.

Flattering letters were sent between Napoleon and Emperor Francis, Empress Maria Ludovika Beatrix and Archduke Charles during the wedding festivities.

Among foreign visitors welcomed by Sauvé were King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, King Hussein of Jordan, Pope John Paul II, Secretary-General of the United Nations Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, French president François Mitterrand, Chinese president Li Xiannian, Romanian president Nicolae Ceauşescu, Mother Teresa, and, eventually, President Reagan.

Jekyll's series of thematic gardening books emphasized the importance and value of natural plantings and were influential in the U. S. In 1913 Beatrix married Max Farrand, the accomplished historian at Stanford University in California and Yale University in Connecticut, and the first director of the Huntington Library in California.

He was appointed Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw ( Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion ) when on completion of the project the recordings were presented to Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands on October 20, 2010 in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.

In the presence of HM Queen Beatrix in 2004 three bridges designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava were opened.

The double-decker car ferries that serviced the two Western Scheldt crossings until 2003 were sold to Italian companies, where two of them, the Queen Beatrix ( renamed Tremestieri ) and Prince Johan Friso ( renamed Acciarello ) were adapted for the crossing between Messina and Villa San Giovanni on the Italian mainland.

The first parkways in the United States were developed during the late 19th Century by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Beatrix Farrand as roads segregated for pedestrians, bicyclists, equestrians, and horse carriages, such as the Eastern Parkway, which is credited as the world's first parkway, and Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, New York.

In April 1191 in Rome, Henry and Constance were crowned Emperor and Empress by Pope Celestine III, and now the pair turned south to claim the Kingdom of Sicily in the name of Constance, who was the posthumous daughter of Roger II of Sicily by his third wife Beatrix of Rethel and therefore the legitimate heiress to the throne.

The images in picture books use a range of media such as oil paints, acrylics, watercolor and pencil. Two of the earliest books with something like the format picture books still retain now were Heinrich Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter from 1845 and Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit from 1902.

The gardens were created by Dorothy Elmhirst with the involvement of major landscape designers Beatrix Farrand and Percy Cane and feature a tiltyard ( thought actually to be the remains of an Elizabethan water garden ) and major sculptures, including examples by Henry Moore, Willi Soukop and Peter Randall-Page.

Maxime Verhagen of the CDA and Mark Rutte ( VVD ) also gave their support for this solution when they were invited for consultation with Beatrix.

Randolph Caldecott, Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, John Tenniel, Aubrey Beardsley, Roger Hargreaves, Arthur Rackham, John Leech, George Cruikshank and Beatrix Potter were notable book illustrators.

Among the royal guests were Crown Prince Olav ( later King Olav V ) and Crown Princess Märtha of Norway, Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Felix of Luxembourg, King Peter II of Yugoslavia, King George II of Greece, Empress Zita of Austria and her daughters, as well as Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, her daughter, Princess Juliana ( later Queen Juliana ), and granddaughters, Princesses Beatrix ( later Queen Beatrix ) and Margriet.

By 13: 00 hours both the infantry landing ships HMS Princess Beatrix and HMS Queen Emma had embarked all their troops and were ready to sail.

On the other side were Prince Bernhard, his supporters and the children of him and Juliana, including the later Dutch queen, Beatrix.

He says the EMI Board were not enthused, and Nat Cohen had never heard of Beatrix Potter, but he had complete artistic control for any movie made under one million pounds so could get it approved.
