In an attempt to expand the collections away from these unfavourable conditions, Kew has established two out-stations, at Wakehurst Place in Sussex, a National Trust property, and ( jointly with the Forestry Commission ) Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent, the latter specialising in growing conifers.

Bedgebury National Pinetum at Bedgebury, Kent, in the United Kingdom, is a recreational and conservational arboretum and, with the National Arboretum at Westonbirt, comprises the UK National Arboreta.

Bedgebury National Pinetum conducts conservation work and is home to some 56 vulnerable or critically endangered species and houses five NCCPG National Plant Collections.

One well-known site is Bedgebury Pinetum, where flocks gather to roost in winter.

The arboretum is managed by the Forestry Commission, which also manages Bedgebury Pinetum.

Universities, agricultural colleges, schools, arboreta ( e. g. Bedgebury Pinetum ) and botanic gardens ( the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Glasgow Botanic Gardens and both Oxford and Cambridge University Botanic Garden ) all add to the diversity.

In 2007, the Forestry Commission planted large numbers of young trees at Bedgebury Pinetum in the UK as part of a project aiming to conserve the genetic resources of endangered conifers.

Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, between Bewl Water and Bedgebury Pinetum, the village is a 25-minute cycle ride from the Bewl Valley Sailing Club, where windsurfing, sailing, kayaking and fishing are readily available.

In the 1840s, Beresford expanded the Bedgebury Estate near Goudhurst, Kent.

Bedgebury is one of the oldest estates in Kent: having given its name to the de Bedgebury family, it passed into the hands of the Culpeper family in 1450.

Bedgebury is first mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter in AD 841, the name deriving from the Old English bycgan, meaning " buy ", and the Kentish vecge, meaning " to bend or turn ", possibly in reference to a stream.

The Bedgebury Conifer Conservation Project, initiated in 2007, is designed to use redundant forest plots to grow large numbers-up to 500-of endangered conifers to provide an ex-situ genetic resource.

Mountain biking and walking routes in Bedgebury Forest are a one-minute cycle ride from the A21 crossroads, as is the golf course at Dale Hill, on the western edge of the village.

The ICCP aims to promote the conservation of conifers through conservation work, research and education, and work carried out at Bedgebury makes up part of the effort to conserve the genetic diversity of conifers, particularly those from temperate forests.

In medieval times, Cranbrook was a centre of the Wealden cloth industry ; and iron-making was carried on at Bedgebury on the River Teise.

Hamlets include Bedgebury Cross, Iden Green, Stonecrouch and Winchet Hill.

In the summer of 2007 the school reopened as the Bell Bedgebury International School, and the grounds also play host to the Bell Bedgebury Language Centre.

Michelin has an important truck tire manufacturing plant in Waterville and the Department of National Defence has its largest air force base in Atlantic Canada located at CFB Greenwood along with an important training facility at Camp Aldershot, near Kentville.
