Green-grey dacite and quartz andesite from the Hawkins Volcanics cover the surrounding areas including up to the New South Wales border, north to One Tree Hill, south east to the Harcourt Hill and south to the north edge of Belconnen.

In 1967 the then National Capital Development Commission adopted the " Y Plan " which laid out future urban development in Canberra around a series of central shopping and commercial area known as the ' town centres ' linked by freeways, the layout of which roughly resembled the shape of the letter Y, with Tuggeranong at the base of the Y and Belconnen and Gungahlin located at the ends of the arms of the Y.

Belconnen consists of 25 suburbs, the majority of which are predominantly characterised by detached single family homes on suburban blocks.

Many ACTION buses travelling between City and Dickson, Gungahlin or Belconnen use the road, which has many bus stops along it.

The village closest to the urban area is Hall which is located just past Belconnen near the New South Wales border.

It is approximately 4km from the nearest town centre ( Belconnen ) which includes a Westfield shopping centre and a range of shops, cafes, supermarkets, a movie theatre a bus interchange.

At the edge and within Dunlop lies the Canberra Nature Park called Dunlop Grasslands Nature Reserve, West Belconnen Ponds, Jarramlee Pond and Fassifern Pond which are part of the Ginninderra Catchment.

It does not have any suburban houses, consisting only of part of Lake Ginninderra, the Belconnen Naval Radio Station, and an open area of grassland where there is a reservoir and substation.

It also links to the Glenloch Interchange, where roads such as Caswell Drive connect to Belconnen.
