A descendant of one of the first settlers to America, Philippe de la Noye ( Delano ) ( 1602 – 1681 ), whose bloodline also includes Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jane Delano attended Cook Academy, a Baptist boarding school in her hometown then studied nursing at the Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing in New York City, where she graduated in 1886.

In 1972, he became the senior pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, where he remained until March 2005.

Bellevue Baptist was founded in 1903 by Central Baptist Church as a mission church on the outskirts of Memphis.

Bellevue became one of the largest Southern Baptist churches in the United States in the 1950s with more than 9, 000 members.

Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary is located on across the street from Bellevue ( 35 of the acres were donated by Bellevue ).

While he was pastor of Bellevue, Lee served three consecutive terms as president of the Southern Baptist Convention: 1949, 1950 and 1951.
