The American bison ( Bison bison ), also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds, became nearly extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle, and has made a recent resurgence largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves.

Bison herds, which had once numbered in the millions, were now threatened with extinction.

Numerous species including European Bison, Moose and Brown Bear which once inhabited the region may be seen in the Lüneburg Heath Wildlife Park alongside more exotic animals like Snow Leopards and Arctic Wolves.

The name comes from the Spanish adaptation of the French vache or cow, given to the area by French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle for the sightings of Plains Bison, which were once common near the bay and the creeks that feed it.

Where once grazing Plains Bison and periodic wildfires due to lightning reduced ground cover, the birds now have difficulty making their way through thick undergrowth.
