Just about every notable figure of the period is connected with the events in some way, from " Elephant Man " Joseph Merrick to Oscar Wilde, from the Native American writer Black Elk to William Morris, the artist Walter Sickert to Aleister Crowley, who makes a brief appearance as a young boy in short trousers, sucking on a candy cane, and lecturing the police about magic.

Notable persons include Tataŋka Iyotake ( Sitting Bull ) from the Hunkpapa band ; Touch the Clouds from the Miniconjou band ; and, Tašuŋke Witko ( Crazy Horse ), Maȟpiya Luta ( Red Cloud ), Heȟaka Sapa ( Black Elk ), Siŋte Gleška ( Spotted Tail ), and Billy Mills from the Oglala band.

This was designed based on symbolism in Niehardt's Black Elk Speaks ( 1932 ).

This has become his best-known work, based on the oral history and spiritual teachings of Black Elk, a prominent Oglala Lakota sachem or medicine man.

Elk City is also in close proximity to many other attractions in Western Oklahoma, including the Flying W Guest Ranch, Foss State Park, the Washita National Wildlife Refuge, Black Kettle National Grassland, the Wichita Mountains, the Antelope Hills, the Quartz Mountains, the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, and the Black Kettle Museum.

Mule deer, Prong Horn Antelope, Elk, Moose, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goat, Black Bear, and Mountain Lion can be observed within miles of town.

Sampson appeared in the production of Black Elk Speaks with the American Indian Theater Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where David Carradine and other Native American actors like Wes Studi and Randolph Mantooth starred in stage productions.

Lakota ambassadeurs to Wovoka, Kicking Bear and Short Bull taught the Sioux that while performing the Ghost Dance, they would wear special Ghost Dance shirts as seen by Black Elk in a vision.

His most well-known work is Black Elk Speaks ( 1932 ), an extended narration of the visions of the Lakota medicine man Black Elk.

In the summer of 1930, as part of his research into the American Indian perspective on the Ghost Dance movement, Neihardt contacted an Oglala holy man named Black Elk.

As Neihardt recounts, Black Elk shared his life's narrative, including his sacred visions and some of the Oglala rituals he had performed.

Du Bois ' Black Reconstruction, first published in 1935, historians have noted African American contributions during Reconstruction to founding what were often the first systems of public education and welfare institutions in the South, gave muted praise for Republican efforts to extend suffrage and provide other social institutions, and excoriated Johnson for opposing the extension of basic rights to freedmen.

In addition to the towns and monuments noted below, the Black Forest is crossed by numerous long distance footpaths, including some of the first to be established.

The Byzantines had easy access to crude oil from the naturally occurring wells around the Black Sea ( e. g., the wells around Tmutorakan noted by Constantine Porphyrogennetos ) or in various locations throughout the Middle East.
