As with most of the early Bohemian rulers, Bořivoj is a shadowy figure ; exact dates for his reign and vital statistics cannot be established.

Together with his cousin Svatopluk, Vladislav expelled his brother Bořivoj II from Bohemia in 1107.

Bořivoj II returned from exile with the support of Prince Bolesław III Wrymouth of Poland, but was defeated and imprisoned by Vladislav in 1110.

Oldřich intended to recognise the suzerainty of Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor, and thereby gain his support, but Bořivoj had already been confirmed by the emperor.

Bořivoj and his wife Ludmila were baptised by Methodius ( probably in 883 ), and the latter became an enthusiastic evangelist, although the religion failed to take root among Bořivoj's subjects.

In 1117, the brothers were reconciled and they ruled the duchy jointly ( though divided ) until 1120, when a new disagreement led Bořivoj to self-exile in Hungary, where he died on 2 February 1124.

Bořivoj ( Boris ) Čelovský ( 8 September 1923 in Ostrava-Heřmanice – 12 February 2008 ) was a Czech-Canadian historian, member of the post-1948 Czechoslovak political exile and former political adviser.
