In early 1933, Bo Gu arrived with the German Comintern adviser Otto Braun ( Li De ) and took control of party affairs.

The First Red Army formed from the First, Third and Fifth Army Groups in southern Jiangxi under command of Bo Gu and Li De ( Otto Braun ).

In July 1934, the leaders of the Party, dominated by the " Twenty-Eight Bolsheviks ", a militant group formed in Moscow by Wang Ming and Bo Gu, forced Mao from the Politburo of the Communist Party in Ruijin and placed him briefly under house arrest.

On October 16, 1934, a force of 130, 000 soldiers and civilians under Bo Gu and Li De attacked the line of Kuomintang positions near Yudu.

The conditions of the Red Army's forced withdrawal demoralized some Communist leaders ( particularly Bo Gu and Otto Braun ), but Zhou remained calm and retained his command.

Bo Gu, the first speaker, attributed the Red Army's losses to " objective " causes, particularly the enemy's overwhelming numerical superiority, and poor coordination of Communist forces.

Although the failed leadership of Bo Gu and Li De was denounced, Mao was not able to win the support of a sufficient number of Party leaders to gain outright power at the conference.

However, after the third counter encirclement campaign, Mao was removed from the leadership and replaced by the Chinese communists returning from the Soviet Union such as Wang Ming, and the command of the Chinese Red Army was handled by a three man committee that included Wang Ming's associates Otto Braun ( Li De ), the Comintern military advisor, Bo Gu, and Zhou Enlai.

The Comintern sent Yang back to China to assist and support other pro-Comintern CCP leaders, including Bo Gu, Otto Braun ( Li De ), Wang Ming, and Zhang Guotao, but Yang and some of the other 28 Bolsheviks, including Ye Jianying, supported Mao in preference to leaders which the Comintern preferred.

At the time, the CPC was under the reign of members of the 28 Bolsheviks, including Bo Gu and Zhang Wentian, and Otto Braun ( also known by his Chinese name, Li De ), the Military Advisor of Comintern, took control of military command.

He was a long-time associate of the Bo family: he reportedly shared a close personal relationship with Bo ’ s wife, Gu Kailai, and had helped the couple ’ s son Bo Guagua earn admission to Harrow School in England.

In October 2011, Heywood reportedly had a business dispute with Bo ’ s wife, Gu Kailai, when he demanded a higher commission for his services.

Bo married his second wife, Gu Kailai, in 1986.

Bo said that Gu " now basically just stays at home, doing some housework for me.
