Archaeological evidence shows that the Khoikhoi entered South Africa from Botswana through two distinct routes – traveling west, skirting the Kalahari to the west coast, then down to the Cape, and travelling south-east out into the Highveld and then southwards to the south coast.

The following year, it was renamed Northern Province, which remained the name until 11 July 2003, when the name of the province was formally changed to the name of its most important river – on the border with Zimbabwe and Botswana – after deliberation by the provincial government and amendment of the Constitution.

The Botswana government considered the island as an integral part of the Chobe National Park, whereas the Namibian government, and many inhabitants of the eastern Caprivi Strip, held that not only was the island part of the original German – British agreement, but that generations of inhabitants had used it for seasonal grazing, for reed-gathering, and as a burial site.

Sir Seretse Khama, KBE ( July 1, 1921 – July 13, 1980 ) was a statesman from Botswana.

* October 11 – Chris Phatswe, a disgruntled and suicidal Air Botswana pilot, commandeers an empty ATR-42 airliner belonging to the airline and circles Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone, Botswana, for two hours before crashing his plane into the airlines other two ATR-42s, which are parked on the ground, killing himself and destroying all three airliners.

The African elephant ( Loxodonta africana ) is currently split-listed, with all populations except those of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe listed in Appendix I.

The Kalahari Desert ( in Afrikaans " Dorsland ", meaning " thirst land " or " thirsty land ") is a large semi-arid sandy savannah in Southern Africa extending, covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa.

The surrounding Kalahari Basin covers over extending farther into Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, and encroaching into parts of Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Drainage is by dry valleys, seasonally inundated pans, and the large salt pans of the Makgadikgadi Pan in Botswana and Etosha Pan in Namibia.

They are currently restricted to the Kalahari Desert, primarily in Namibia and Botswana, and to the Rift Valley in central Tanzania.

Lesotho, is a member of the Southern African Customs Union ( SACU ) in which tariffs have been eliminated on the trade of goods between other member countries, which also include Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland.

In addition to its membership in the Southern African Development Community ( SADC ), Namibia presently belongs to the Southern African Customs Union ( SACU ) with South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland.
