He was the sixth child of Pieter Jiltes Tadema ( 1797 – 1840 ), the village notary, who had had three sons by a previous marriage, and the third child of his mother, Hinke Dirks Brouwer ( c. 1800 – 1863 ).

Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer ForMemRS (; February 27, 1881 – December 2, 1966 ), usually cited as L. E. J. Brouwer but known to his friends as Bertus, was a Dutch mathematician and philosopher, a graduate of the University of Amsterdam, who worked in topology, set theory, measure theory and complex analysis.

The most important of these is guitarist Leo Brouwer, who made significant innovations in classical guitar, and is currently the director of the Havana Symphonic Orchestra.

Many composers have worked with Bream, and among those who dedicated pieces to him are Malcolm Arnold, Richard Rodney Bennett, Benjamin Britten, Leo Brouwer, Peter Racine Fricker, Hans Werner Henze, Humphrey Searle, Tōru Takemitsu, Michael Tippett and William Walton.

Adam Brouwer, who had been a soldier in the service of the Dutch West India Company, built and operated the first gristmill patented in New York at Gowanus ( on land patented July 8, 1645, to Jan Evertse Bout ).

The term itself was used by L. E. J. Brouwer, who in his 1951 lectures at Cambridge described the differences between intuitionism and its predecessors:

The team had in these successful years an Englishman, Chris Bates and a Dutch goalkeeper Alex Brouwer, who came from PSV Eindhoven.

Adriaen Brouwer ( 1605 – January 1638 ) was a Flemish genre painter active in Flanders and the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth century.

The foundational philosophy of intuitionism or constructivism, as exemplified in the extreme by Brouwer and more coherently by Stephen Kleene, requires proofs to be " constructive " in nature – the existence of an object must be demonstrated rather than inferred from a demonstration of the impossibility of its non-existence.
