Butterflies include Silver-washed Fritillary ( Argynnis paphia ), Dark Green Fritillary ( Argynnis aglaja ), Pearl-bordered Fritillary ( Boloria euphrosyne ), Holby Blue ( Celastrina argiolus ) and Brown Argus ( Aricia agestis ).

There are at least 10 different kinds of butterfly on the Head including the Northern Brown Argus which is a nationally rare butterfly in the UK.

The Brown Argus ( Aricia agestis ) is a butterfly in the family Lycaenidae.

They can be mistaken for other female blues but the Brown Argus never has any blue scales at the base of the wings like other female Blues often do.

It could also be mistaken for the Northern Brown Argus Aricia artaxrexes were it not for the fact that their ranges do not overlap in the UK, unlike on continental Europe.

Until a few years ago, these northern colonies were thought to be the Northern Brown Argus and more colonies may yet be found to be misidentified.

The Northern Brown Argus ( Aricia artaxerxes ) is a butterfly in the family Lycaenidae.

Since its discovery in Britain it has been thought to be a form or a subspecies of the Brown Argus Aricia agestis and as well as a species in its own right.

Since 1967 all Brown Argus in the north of England and Scotland have been classified as this species.

The Scottish form is visually quite distinct from the Brown Argus.

The northern English populations belong to a form called salmacis and are very similar to the Brown Argus including the presence of black spots on the under-wing ( see photo ) hence all the confusion.

Like the Brown Argus, it is attractive to ants and often attended by them.

The quarry is a breeding site for the Durham Argus butterfly, a local race of the Brown Argus found only in northeast England.

Butterflies are particularly notable including Common Blue, Brown Argus, Grizzled and Dingy Skipper, Green and Purple Hairstreak, and Dark Green Fritillary.

Llynclys Common, from which there are fine views, is home to eight varieties of orchid and the Brown Argus butterfly.

The varied age and canopy structure of woodland encourages a high diversity of butterflies, nationally scarce species including the White-letter Hairstreak ( Strymonidia walbum ) and High Brown Fritillary ( Argynnis edippe ), while species such as the Chalkhill Blue ( Lysandra coridon ) and Brown Argus ( Aricia agestis ) occur on the limestone grassland.

There are also several species of butterfly including ; Chalkhill blue, Dark Green Fritillary, Meadow Brown, Marbled White, small heath, and common blue.

Notable insects present in the Burren include the butterfly the Pearl-bordered Fritillary Boloria euphrosyne, Brown Hairstreak Thecla betulae, Marsh Fritillary Euphydryas aurinia and Wood White Leptidea sinapis ; the moths, the Burren Green Calamia tridens, Irish Annulet Odontognophos dumetata and Transparent Burnet Zygaena purpuralis ; the hoverfly Doros profuges and the water-beetle Ochthebius nilssoni.

It is the foodplant of the Pearl bordered fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Silver-washed Fritillary and High Brown Fritillary butterfly.

The butterfly loosely resembles a small Meadow Brown, but the brown colour of the wings appears noticeably paler in flight.

The Gatekeeper ( Pyronia tithonus ) sometimes called the Hedge Brown is a common butterfly in the United Kingdom.

As indicated by its alternate name, the gatekeeper butterfly prefers the habitat of meadow margins and hedges ; field gates are often in such locations, and thus the Gatekeeper can be found much more frequently in such locations than the Meadow Brown for example.

The Brown Hairstreak ( Thecla betulae ) is a butterfly in the family Lycaenidae.

The Brown Peacock or Scarlet Peacock ( Anartia amathea ) is a species of nymphalid butterfly, found primarily in South America.

Notable insects present include the butterfly the Pearl-bordered Fritillary Boloria euphrosyne, Brown Hairstreak Thecla betulae, Marsh Fritillary Euphydryas aurinia and Wood White Leptidea sinapis ; the moths, the Burren Green Calamia tridens, Irish Annulet Odontognophos dumetata and Transparent Burnet Zygaena purpuralis ; and the hoverfly Doros profuges with sightings of the Bantasauras Rex on the island.

The High Brown Fritillary ( Fabriciana adippe ) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family, native from Europe across mainland Asia to Japan.

In summer months look out for damselflies and dragonflies and in the spring and summer look out for the Speckled Wood butterfly plus Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Gatekeeper, Orange Tip and occasional Brimstone.

* At the U. S. Long Course Swimming Championships at Brown Deer, Wisconsin, Mary T. Meagher, 16, shattered her own world record for fastest time in the women's 100-meter butterfly swimming competition, with a time of 57. 93 seconds.

Maine songwriter, musician, band leader, and Union soldier Thomas Brigham Bishop ( 1835 – 1905 ) has also been credited as the originator of the John Brown Song.

Bishop, who would later command a company of black troops in the American Civil War, was in nearby Martinsburg when Brown was hanged at Charles Town in 1859 and, according to MacIntyre, Bishop wrote the first four verses of the song at the time.
