Dawn is first introduced as Buffy's ( Sarah Michelle Gellar ) younger sister at the end of Buffy season five premiere " Buffy vs. Dracula ", though Buffy had been previously established as an only child.

In Jane Espenson's " Retreat " story arc ( 2009 ), as Buffy begins to realize she has developed a romantic attraction to Xander, she discovers his newfound romantic relationship with Dawn ; Xander had previously been her confidante throughout Season Eight.

The Big Bad of the seventh season is the First Evil, who taunts Buffy and her friends appearing as loved ones who previously died.

On orders from the Mayor, Faith murders a geologist who has uncovered evidence of a previously ascended demon, then shoots Angel with a poisoned arrow to distract Buffy and the Scoobies, who have to care for, and try to save, Angel.

Angel Investigations is a fictional detective agency run by the title character Angel previously on the WB television series Angel ( a spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer ).

* This episode once again establishes Xander as the " heart " of the group, the one that can always grant emotional support to the others in the hard times, a role that was previously established in the Season 1 finale " Prophecy Girl " when Xander, who at the time had a crush on Buffy, revives her through CPR and in the Season 4 episode " Primeval " when Buffy, Willow, Giles and Xander all merge their psyches together in a spell with Xander representing " Animus ", the heart.

* Finch's death causes the third murder investigation involving Buffy in less than two years: she was previously suspected in the deaths of fellow Slayer Kendra and her would-be stepfather, the robot Ted.

Buffy gets back to her dorm room just as Willow is also returning from her night out, now carrying the crystal she had previously refused to accept from Tara.

Wearing a microphone and camera, complete with a heart monitor, Buffy goes on the mission alone, but it turns out to be a trap set by Professor Walsh and the Initiative, with Buffy trapped in a sewer with two demons she had previously seen anesthetized in the Initiative's facility.

Dawn suffers from abandonment issues due to both her mother and Buffy having died in the same year she entered Buffy's life ; she considers the Scooby Gang to be her surrogate family and is very close to them.

Following the precedent set by Star Trek, these story arcs show alternative universes that have turned out " worse " than the " original " universe: in Stargate SG-1 the first two encountered parallel realities featured Earth being overwhelmed by an unstoppable Goa ' uld onslaught ; in Buffy, two episodes concern a timeline in which Buffy came to Sunnydale too late to stop the vampires from taking control ; Lois & Clark repeatedly visits an alternative universe where Clark Kent's adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, died when he was ten years of age, and Lois Lane is also apparently dead.

In the opening plotline, Buffy, her twin brother, Jody ( Johnny Whitaker ) and older sister, Cissy ( Kathy Garver ) are sent to live with their Uncle Bill ( Brian Keith ) and his valet Mr. French ( Sebastian Cabot ) after the children's parents died in a car accident.

During this conversation, Buffy asks how Kennedy's doing and Willow reveals that she died, though it was only a short-lived mystical death.

Faith awakens in the hospital to discover that the Mayor has in fact died and left her a video and a device that will allow her to switch bodies with Buffy.

Regardless of this, Joyce's nurturing of Buffy is cited as being one of the reasons Buffy has been able to live as long as she has — much longer than other Slayers, who historically have usually died very young — and is a source of Buffy's strength.

Willow initially theorizes that these powers are a result of Buffy unwittingly absorbing the collective powers of all of the Slayers who have died since their organization began, but Angel later claims that they are in fact a reward because of the fulfillment of her destiny and involvement with the coming of a new reality.

* Spike's in the basement of the newly refurbished Sunnydale High, The First appears before him as a host of former villains: Warren, Glory, Adam, the Mayor, Drusilla and Buffy's first big bad, the Master, and since it's able to appear as those who have died, its last manifestation is as Buffy herself.

Deposited and incorporeal in Wolfram & Hart, and unable to leave the city limits, Spike gradually grows attached to L. A. and reconsiders his initial intention to seek out Buffy in Europe, preferring to allow Buffy to remember him as a hero who died to save the world.

The First is incorporeal, but it has the ability to take the form of anyone who has died, even if the person is still active in some way, such as Buffy, or a vampire ; through skillful playacting it can impersonate a living person.

In " The Body ", Buffy is powerless as she comes upon her lifeless mother, who has died of a brain aneurysm.

In the waiting room outside the morgue, the doctor tells Buffy that Joyce died of an aneurysm suddenly and painlessly.

Left alone with Buffy, Tara tells her that her own mother died when she was 17 and she went through something similar.

In the hospital, as Buffy listens to the doctor confirm how Joyce died, the doctor says something, but the words " I have to lie to you to make you feel better " are spoken discordantly, as though, according to cinema scholar Katy Stevens, Buffy " constructs what she believes to be an unmentionable truth — her culpability in her mother's death ".

* While Buffy & Riley are talking in the park, she says, " Who died and made you John Wayne?

* As Wesley dies he asks Illyria to lie to him, which mirrors a conversation Buffy has with Giles in the Buffy episode " Lie to Me " after a friend of hers has died.

The narrative follows Giles, whose friend has died, prompting the Scooby Gang to unravel his mysterious past ; meanwhile, Buffy crashes into Ethan Rayne again.

It is explained by the Beljoxa's Eye that The First exploited a weakness in the Slayer line that was created when Buffy died at the end of season 5, and was subsequently resurrected.

Principal Wood does explain to Buffy that his memory of his mother is " fuzzy " since he was only a young boy when she died.

The idea of the remake caused wrath among fans of the TV series, since Whedon is not involved and the project does not have any connection with the show and will not conform to the continuity maintained with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight and Season Nine comic book titles.

* In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode entitled Him ( Season 7, Episode 6, aired November 5, 2002 ), Dawn Summers ( Michelle Trachtenberg ) is called into the principal's office to answer some questions about a boy who fell down the stairs under suspicious circumstances.

First forming in the Season One episode " The Harvest " to prevent The Master from opening a portal to hell, the line-up of the group varied from year to year, but the core that remained intact throughout the series ' run was Buffy herself and her best friends, Xander Harris and Willow Rosenberg, as well as her Watcher, Rupert Giles.

Although Buffy had initially been reluctant to accept her destiny, by the end of Season One she faces the prophecy of her death head-on.

Even after the Watchers ' Council stripped him of his title in Season Three, he continued to support Buffy.

In Season Six he returns after Buffy is resurrected, then leaves again so that his presence won't hold her back from growing strong and independent.

Though he returns to Buffy in Season Eight, Angel was possessed and killed Giles.

However, his relationship with Buffy gradually disintegrates, and in Season Five he leaves to join another army unit.

In Season Eight, he returns to work as a mole for Buffy, infiltrating the organization of the villain Twilight.

Over time, Spike falls in love with Buffy, and he briefly becomes Buffy's lover in Season Six.

Willow appears in every Buffy episode ( making her the only character besides Buffy herself to do so ), is featured in three episodes of the spinoff Angel, an animated series and video game — both of which use Hannigan's voice, and the comic Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight ( 2007 – 2011 ), which uses Hannigan's likeness and continues Willow's storyline following the television series.

A story arc in Season Eight has Buffy travel 200 years into the future to battle and kill Dark Willow.

Long after Tara's death, Willow faces the choices she made: in the Season Eight episode " Anywhere But Here ", Willow tells Buffy that she is responsible for Tara's death.

Season three ( 1998 – 1999 ) sees Buffy reconnect to her calling, her friends, and her family after her departure, as well as make difficult life decisions regarding her relationship with the resurrected Angel.

Buffy appears in literature such as the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight comic book series and various spin-offs.

In Season Eight ( 2007 – 11 ), it establishes Buffy is not living with the Immortal in Rome which is simply a cover story to ensure her safety as she is now the leader of a global organization which recruits and trains Slayers to deal with demonic threats worldwide.

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine, Buffy continues slaying vampires in San Francisco but discovers a new threat: creatures dubbed " zompires " by Xander: feral and nearly mindless vampires created when vampires sire people after the destruction of the Seed, as demons can no longer enter this dimension to fully possess their bodies.

Canonically, the character appears in issues of the comic books Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight and Angel: After the Fall in 2007, several Spike miniseries, and a Spike ongoing series in 2010.

The first flashback occurs in Buffy Season Five's " Fool for Love ", and reveals William as in fact a meek, effete young man ( and an aspiring poet ) who lived in London with his mother Anne.

In 1977 he fought and killed a second Slayer, Nikki Wood, aboard a subway train in New York City, taking from her a black leather duster which he wears throughout his appearances on Buffy and Angel until it is destroyed in an explosion in Season Five of Angel, whereupon he gets a new one that looks exactly like the old one (" The Girl in Question ").
