The first D ' Oyly Carte Opera Company performance of the piece was on 31 December 1894, to accompany another Sullivan – Burnand opera, The Chieftain, which had opened on December 12 at the Savoy Theatre.

On tour in 1871, Carte conducted Cox and Box by composer Arthur Sullivan and dramatist F. C. Burnand, in tandem with English adaptations of two Offenbach pieces, called Rose of Auvergne and Breaking the Spell, in which Carte's client Selina Dolaro appeared.

After his second wife's early death in March 1844, aged 28, Lord Anglesey married thirdly, Ellen Burnand, daughter of George Burnand and former wife of J. W. Bell, on 8 March 1860.

Sullivan's first foray into comic opera was Cox and Box ( 1866 ), written with librettist F. C. Burnand for an informal gathering of friends.

Sullivan and Gilbert and their producer Richard D ' Oyly Carte themselves call their joint works comic operas to distinguish this family-friendly fare from the risqué French operettas of the 1850s and 1860s.

Richard D ' Oyly Carte ( 3 May 1844 – 3 April 1901 ) was an English talent agent, theatrical impresario, composer and hotelier during the latter half of the Victorian era.
The three each put up £ 1, 000 and formed a new partnership under the name " Mr Richard D ' Oyly Carte's Opera Company ".
During the years when the Gilbert and Sullivan operas were being written, Richard D ' Oyly Carte also produced operas and plays by other writing teams, as well as other works to fill the Savoy Theatre in between new operas.
However, Gilbert, Sullivan, and their producer, Richard D ' Oyly Carte, failed in their efforts over the next decade to control the American performance copyrights over their operas.
