Cox and Box ; or, The Long-Lost Brothers, is a one-act comic opera with a libretto by F. C. Burnand and music by Arthur Sullivan, based on the 1847 farce Box and Cox by John Maddison Morton.

Sullivan's first foray into comic opera was Cox and Box ( 1866 ), written with librettist F. C. Burnand for an informal gathering of friends.
He, too, was a first-rate practical musician ... As he was the most absurd person, so was he the very kindliest ..." Fred's creation would serve as a model for the rest of the collaborators ' works, and each of them has a crucial comic little man role, as Burnand had put it.
In keeping with the all-pseudonymous nature of the band, Burnand was known as " Hogg Robinson " for the first Arista single, and later, simply as " Hogg ".
Hues and DeSpig wrote the song " Lovers " for the album, and Hues scored the strings for that song, while Burnand played sax on the album.

He also contributed regularly to Theatre magazine and wrote sentimental poetry and song lyrics ( including " Oh Promise Me "), which were often published in the magazine Punch by his friend, the editor, F. C. Burnand.

Burnand was born in London, England, the son of Francis Burnand, a London stockbroker and his first wife Emma Cowley ( a descendant of poet and dramatist Hannah Cowley ), who died when young Francis was only eight years old.
For the Gaiety Theatre, London, Burnand wrote a burlesque on The Tempest entitled Ariel in 1883, with music by Meyer Lutz, starring Nellie Farren and Arthur Williams.
