Beat writer William Burroughs read a paper by Richard Evans Schultes on the subject and sought out yagé in the early 1950s while traveling through South America in the hopes that it could relieve or cure opiate addiction ( see The Yage Letters ).

* Burroughs collaborated with University of Illinois on a multiprocessor architecture developing the ILLIAC IV computer in the early 1960s.

The concept can be traced to at least the Dadaists of the 1920s, but was popularized in the late 1950s and early 1960s by writer William S. Burroughs, and has since been used in a wide variety of contexts.

Burroughs cited T. S. Eliot's poem, The Waste Land ( 1922 ) and John Dos Passos ' U. S. A. trilogy, which incorporated newspaper clippings, as early examples of the cut ups he popularized.

In the early 1960s Ace reintroduced Edgar Rice Burroughs ' work, which had long been out of print, and in 1965, Ace bought the paperback rights to Dune.

Originally employed by the Mathematisch Centrum in Amsterdam, he held a professorship at the Eindhoven University of Technology, worked as a research fellow for Burroughs Corporation in the early 1980s, and later held the Schlumberger Centennial Chair in Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, in the United States.

The latter architecture has continued to evolve into their current zSeries mainframes which, along with the then Burroughs and Sperry ( now Unisys ) MCP-based and OS1100 mainframes, are among the few mainframe architectures still extant that can trace their roots to this early period.

Shrinking demand and tough competition started a shakeout in the market in the early 1970s — RCA sold out to UNIVAC and GE also left ; in the 1980s Honeywell was bought out by Bull ; UNIVAC became a division of Sperry, which later merged with Burroughs to form Unisys Corporation in 1986.

The early Nixie displays were made by a small vacuum tube manufacturer called Haydu Brothers Laboratories, and introduced in 1955 by Burroughs Corporation, who purchased Haydu and owned the name Nixie as a trademark.

In the early ( pre-1930 ) parts of the last century, the coastal areas of northernmost South Carolina were used mostly as farming sites ( the real estate monolith now known as Burroughs and Chapin for decades was named “ Myrtle Beach Farms ”).

Edgar Rice Burroughs ' A Princess of Mars ( 1912 ) is also sometimes seen as a major work of scientific romance, and Sam Moskowitz referred to him in 1958 as " the acknowledged master of the scientific romance ," though the scholar E. F. Bleiler views Burroughs as part of the " new development " of pulp science fiction that arose in the early 20th century.

The Beat writers Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Gregory Corso followed in the mid-1950s and early 1960s.

It now supported a complete keyboard, a " chiclet " design similar to the ones used on early models of the Commodore PET, and greatly improved the display with the addition of the Burroughs Self-Scan 32-character display.

William S. Burroughs, John Cage, Brion Gysin, and Iannis Xenakis were early artists who experimented with it.

Nuttall's self-published " My Own Mag " mimeographed newsletter provided Burroughs with an important outlet for his experimental literature in the early 1960s.

In the early 1960s, the company engaged in a well-known rivalry with Ace Books for the rights to reprint the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and Edgar Rice Burroughs in paperback form.

In addition, Dennis Cooper cited Ministry's video for " Just One Fix ", which featured footage of William S. Burroughs, as an early example of heroin chic.

Libraries were introduced to MCP systems in the early 1980s having been developed by Roy Guck and others at Burroughs.

The neighborhood was once home to Nannie Helen Burroughs, an early civil rights leader and the founder of the National Training School for Women and Girls, an independent boarding school for African-American girls founded in 1909 and located on 50th Street, NE.

Burroughs was the son of a mechanic and worked with machines throughout his childhood.

Directed by Ryan Murphy and starring Annette Bening, the film was based on the memoir by Augusten Burroughs, which is a semi-autobiographical account of Burroughs ' childhood in a dysfunctional family.

* In one of Robert A. Heinlein's last novels, The Number of the Beast ( 1980 ), the heroes flee Earth in a car capable of flight in six dimensions and find several alternate versions of Mars, one which had been colonised by the British and another which is an improbable combination of Burroughs ' fabulous Barsoom with the home planet of the vicious Martians whose invasion of Earth was described by Wells.

During its lifetime Hotel Chelsea has provided a home to many great writers and thinkers including Mark Twain, O. Henry, Herbert Huncke, Dylan Thomas, Arthur C. Clarke, William S. Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Arnold Weinstein, Leonard Cohen, Sharmagne Leland-St. John, Arthur Miller, Quentin Crisp, Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac ( who wrote On the Road there ), Robert Hunter, Jack Gantos, Brendan Behan, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Thomas Wolfe, Charles Bukowski, Raymond Kennedy, Matthew Richardson, James T. Farrell, Valerie Solanas, Mary Cantwell, and René Ricard.

Mason manages to stop them and afterwards goes home, intent on celebrating with his wife Felicia ( Bonnie Burroughs ).

* In Edgar Rice Burroughs ' Venus series ( 1934 – 1946 ) Venus is a tropical world shielded from the heat of the sun by a perpetual cloud cover, home to a humanoid race whose technology is advanced in some respects and retarded in others.

John Carter ' visits ' Burroughs 12 years after the events of A Princess of Mars, claiming to have mastered the secret of inter-planetary travel and stating this will be the last time he makes such a journey from his adopted home.

As a commemoration to the historic capture, the words " Lee Harvey Oswald, November 22, 1963 " were later painted in gold paint on the chair Oswald ( supposedly ) occupied ( the actual chair was removed by the then, manager " Butch " Burroughs who took it home and replaced it with another one which the FBI confiscated the next day for evidence thinking it was the original Oswald seat ) which was the fifth seat from the aisle in the third to last row.

He attempts to rape Burroughs while he's sleeping, but is unsuccessful ( when this patient goes to live with the Finches later in the book, he pays one of the Finches ' daughters for oral sex and then is forced from the home ).

In a 16-season career, Burroughs posted a. 261 batting average with 240 home runs and 882 RBIs in 1689 games.
