It is the twenty-fifth largest municipality in Illinois, and has easy access to downtown Chicago ( the Chicago Loop ) due to public transportation such as the Chicago ' L ' Blue and Green lines, CTA buses, and Metra commuter rail.

CTA buses allow transfers to Red and Green Line trains to the Loop, or provide direct express service downtown.

* October 1 – The Chicago Transit Authority ( CTA ) begins operating the local transit ( buses and ' L '- Subway rapid transit ) systems in Chicago after acquiring the properties of the former Chicago Surface Lines and the Chicago Rapid Transit Company.

The proposed Gold Line, derived from the earlier and more extensive Gray Line plan would have the Electric District operate more like a rapid transit line, by running trains more frequently ( every ten minutes between 6am and midnight ) with reduced-fare transfers to CTA buses and trains.
