E. J. Hulbert, a friend of Agassiz's brother-in-law, Quincy Adams Shaw, had discovered a rich copper lode known as the Calumet conglomerate on the Keweenaw Peninsula Lake Superior in Michigan.

He persuaded them, along with a group of friends, to purchase a controlling interest in the mines, which later became known as the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company based in Calumet, Michigan.

The city lies beside huge freshwater Lake Michigan, and two rivers — the Chicago River in downtown and the Calumet River in the industrial far South Side – flow entirely or partially through Chicago.

While the Chicago River historically handled much of the region's waterborne cargo, today's huge lake freighters use the city's Lake Calumet Harbor on the South Side.

The Copper Queen operated in Douglas from 1904 until 1931, when the Phelps Dodge Corporation purchased the Calumet and Arizona Company and took over their smelter.

Spanning over three 3 days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during late July, the event draws in crowds from around the Calumet Region with guests coming from all over the globe.
