Because man cannot know God's purposes, he cannot complain about his position in the Great Chain of Being ( ll. 33-34 ) and must accept that " Whatever IS, is RIGHT " ( l. 292 ), a theme that would be satirized by Voltaire in Candide ( 1759 ).

The French philosopher Voltaire's classic 1759 novella Candide: Or, Optimism deals with this subject and can be considered an early exploration of this psychological phenomenon.

The important works of the philosophes belonged to a variety of different genres, such as the tale illustrating a particular philosophical point ;( Zadig ( 1747 ) or Candide ( 1759 ), both by Voltaire in 1759 ); or satire on French life disguised as letters from an exotic country ( Lettres persanes by Montesquieu in 1721 ); or essays ( The Spirit of the Laws by Montesquieu in 1748, An Essay on Tolerance by Voltaire in 1763 ; The Social Contract by Rousseau in 1762 ; The Supplement to a voyage of Bougainville by Diderot, or The History of the Two Indias by the Abbé Guillaume-Thomas Raynal ).

The Sultan is in the company of five other deposed European monarchs, and he tells Candide, who initially doubts his credentials:

It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism ( or simply Optimism ) by his mentor, Pangloss.

Voltaire concludes with Candide, if not rejecting optimism outright, advocating an enigmatic precept, " we must cultivate our garden ", in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, " all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds ".

Candide is characterised by its sarcastic tone, as well as by its erratic, fantastical and fast-moving plot.

In Voltaire's Candide, Dr. Pangloss is portrayed as a clueless scholar who, despite the evidence, says that " all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.

Likewise, some of Leonard Bernstein's works he designated as operas ( e. g., Trouble in Tahiti ) are categorized as operettas, and his operetta Candide is sometimes considered a musical.

Ismail Ibn Sharif is mentioned in chapter 11 of Voltaire's Candide.

Farinelli is represented in Voltaire's Candide.

The history of anonymous expression in political dissent is both long and with important effect, as in the Letters of Junius or Voltaire's Candide, or scurrilous as in pasquinades.

It is true that Candide, the first play he wrote for Mlle Déjazet, was stopped by the censor, but Les Premières Armes de Figaro, Monsieur Garat, and Les Prés Saint Gervais, produced almost in succession, had a splendid run.

A running joke throughout is that although Roderick is not particularly human-looking, people are unable to believe that he is a robot or simply fail to notice, and treat him instead as an insane man or a disabled child ; but, like Candide, he never complains and always seeks to please.

The same could be said of the works of Voltaire, particularly his comedic and philosophically satirical novel, Candide, which, according to recent research, sold more than 20, 000 copies in its first month alone in 1759.

In 1997, his 14-issue series, Candide in China, published on the World Wide Web, described Chinese inventions.

The book, published in 1710, introduced the term theodicy, and its optimistic approach to the problem of evil is thought to have inspired Candide ( albeit satirically ).
