In Canada the provinces of Atlantic Canada are known for being a home of Celtic music, most notably on the islands of Newfoundland, Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island.

Further, some older forms of Celtic music that are rare in Scotland and Ireland today, such as practice of accompanying a fiddle with a piano, or the Gaelic spinning songs of Cape Breton remain common in the Maritimes.

Cape Breton Island (-formerly Île Royale, Scottish Gaelic: Ceap Breatainn or Eilean Cheap Bhreatainn, Míkmaq: Únamakika, simply: Cape Breton ) is an island on the Atlantic coast of North America.

Cape Breton Island is part of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

The island is divided into four of Nova Scotia's eighteen counties: Cape Breton, Inverness, Richmond, and Victoria.

Cape Breton Island has experienced a decline in population of approximately 4. 4 % since the previous census in 2006.

Approximately 75 % of the island's population is located in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality ( CBRM ) which includes all of Cape Breton County and is often referred to as Industrial Cape Breton, given the history of coal mining and steel manufacturing in this area.

Cape Breton Island's first residents were likely Maritime Archaic natives, ancestors of the Mi ' kmaq, the latter of whom inhabited the island at the time of European discovery.

However, historians are unclear as to whether Cabot first visited Newfoundland or Cape Breton Island.

During the Anglo-French War ( 1627 – 1629 ), under Charles I, by 1629 the Kirkes took Quebec City, Sir James Stewart of Killeith, Lord Ochiltree planted a colony on Cape Breton Island at Baleine, Nova Scotia and Alexander ’ s son, William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling established the first incarnation of “ New Scotland ” at Port Royal.

In addition to Cape Breton Island, the French colony of Île Royale also included Île St .- Jean ( today called Prince Edward Island ).

The first permanently settled Scottish community on Cape Breton Island was Judique, settled in 1775 by Michael Mor MacDonald.

Today, the descendants of the Highland Scots dominate Cape Breton Island's culture, particularly in rural communities.

Cape Breton Island's hydrological features include the Bras d ' Or Lake system, a salt-water fjord at the heart of the island, and freshwater features including Lake Ainslie, the Margaree River system, and the Mira River.

Manatees have been spotted as far north as Cape Cod, and as recently as the late summer of 2006, one was seen in New York City and Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay, as cited in The Boston Globe.

The Mayflower Mall, Cape Breton Island's largest shopping centre, divided the old Wal-Mart location and added three large retailers, Winners, SportChek, and Future Shop.

Investments were also made to made expand renewable energy use with the development of the North Cape Wind Farm in West Prince, strengthening Prince Edward Island's credentials as a national leader in environmental sustainability.

Their itinerary may also include stops at Ross Island's historic explorer huts at Discovery Point near McMurdo Station or Cape Royds ( Antarctica New Zealand ).

At its northern end, the Aupouri Peninsula reaches a number of capes each of which is claimed by some people to be the North Island's northernmost point: Cape Maria van Diemen, Cape Reinga, North Cape, and the Surville Cliffs.

It runs for 40 kilometres along the Cook Strait coast from Turakirae Head at the southern end of the Rimutaka Ranges to Cape Palliser, the North Island's southernmost point.

Cape Breton Island's fiddle music was brought to North America by Scottish immigrants during the Highland Clearances.

It nests on offshore islands, with the main population stronghold being Triangle Island off Vancouver Island's Cape Scott, where the population is estimated to be around 550, 000 pairs.

Minor islands surround it, such as Breakwater Island ( high ), located north of Cape Astrup, Wiencke Island's northernmost point.

During the first half of the 19th century, Cape Breton Island experienced an influx of Highland Scots numbering approximately 50, 000 as a result of the Highland Clearances.

To this day Gaelic is still the first language of a number of elderly Cape Bretoners.

Marconi's contributions to Cape Breton Island were also quite significant as he used the island's geography to his advantage in transmitting the first North American trans-Atlantic radio message from a station constructed at Table Head in Glace Bay to a receiving station at Poldhu in Cornwall, England.

American Revolutionary War veteran Henry Hall is credited as first to farm cranberries in the Cape Cod town of Dennis around 1816.

In 1816, Henry Hall first commercially grew cranberries in East Dennis, Massachusetts on Cape Cod.

The state takes its name from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, an English nobleman and Virginia's first colonial governor, after whom what is now called Cape Henlopen was originally named.

He was the first European known to sight and enter the Congo River and to explore the West African coast between Cape St. Catherine and Cape Cross, almost from the equator to Walvis Bay in Namibia.

Cão then coasted down along the present Angola ( Portuguese West Africa ), and erected a second pillar, probably marking the termination of this voyage, at Cape Santa Maria ( the Monte Negro of these first visitors ).

* 1967 – Louis Washkansky, the first man to undergo a heart transplant, dies in Cape Town, South Africa, after living for 18 days after the transplant.

In 1542, he left for his first missionary activity among the Paravars, katesar / kadaiyar Pattamkattiyars ( head of fishery coast ) and mukkuvars, pearl fishers along the east coast of southern India, North of Cape Comorin ( or Sup Santaz ).
