Their replacements, planted in a ceremony involving well-known people from television shows such as Blue Peter and including locals Gloria Hunniford and Caron Keating, were vandalised, leaving only one standing.

After four series of the programme Ellis left to join Blue Peter on 28 April 1983, and during her four year stint co-presented with Simon Groom, Sarah Greene, Peter Duncan, Michael Sundin, Mark Curry and Caron Keating.

During this period she presented the BBC's Open Air programme, authored a book entitled How to Get Married Without Divorcing Your Family with her friend and ex Blue Peter co-host Caron Keating in 1994, and provided voiceovers for numerous advertisements.

Set up in Keating's memory, The Caron Keating Foundation is a fund-raising partnership set up to raise money to offer financial support to professional carers, complementary healing practitioners, and support groups dealing with cancer patients, as well as individuals and families who are affected by the disease.

She moved to Sevenoaks, Kent, where she still lives, and where her daughter Caron Keating ( 1962 – 2004 ) died of breast cancer.

Leslie presented Blue Peter with Caron Keating, Yvette Fielding, Diane-Louise Jordan, Anthea Turner and Tim Vincent.

On May 20, 2009, Starsailor was named Hard Rock's Philanthropic Artist of the Year in recognition of the work they'd done in support of the Caron Keating Foundation, the AECC of Barcelona and Nordoff – Robbins Music Therapy, as well as having contributed an exclusive cover of Graham Nash's Military Madness to the World Hunger Year Serve3 charity album.

Her late daughter Caron Keating spent much of her childhood in the village.

Kermode also co-hosted an early 1990s afternoon magazine show on BBC Radio 5 called A Game of Two Halves alongside former Blue Peter presenter Caron Keating.
