Joachim Neander ( Neumann ) ( 165031 May 1680 ) was a German Reformed ( Calvinist ) Church teacher, theologian and hymn writer whose most famous hymn, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation () is generally regarded as one of the greatest hymns of praise of the Christian church and, since being translated into English by Catherine Winkworth in the 19th century, it has appeared in most major hymnals.
The true author of the pun was, however, Catherine Winkworth, an English girl then in her teens, who submitted it to Punch, which then printed it as a factual report.

According to the Encyclopedia of Britain by Bamber Gascoigne ( 1993 ), it was Catherine Winkworth who, learning of General Charles James Napier's ruthless, unauthorized, and successful campaign to conquer the Indian province of Sind, "... remarked to her teacher that Napier's despatch to the governor general of India, after capturing Sind, should have been Peccavi ( Latin for ' I have sinned ').
Catherine Winkworth died suddenly of heart disease near Geneva on 1 July 1878 and was buried in Monnetier, in Upper Savoy.
