The Cutter Expansive Classification system is a library classification system devised by Charles Ammi Cutter.

Charles Ammi Cutter ( 1837 – 1903 ), inspired by the decimal classification of his contemporary Melvil Dewey, and with Dewey's initial encouragement, developed his own classification scheme for the Winchester Town Library and then the Boston Athenaeum, at which he served as librarian for twenty-four years.

Ammi and his followers draw on a long tradition in black American culture ( see Black Hebrew Israelites ) which holds that black Americans are the descendants of the Ancient Israelites ( Ammi cites Charles Harrison Mason of Mississippi, William Saunders Crowdy of Virginia, Bishop William Boome of Tennessee, Charles Price Jones of Mississippi and Elder Saint Samuel of Tennessee as early exponents of black descent from Israelites ).

Lieutenant Charles “ Savez ” Read may have been " anchor man " ( graduated last ) in the class of 1860, but his later service to the Confederate States Navy included defending New Orleans, service on CSS Arkansas and CSS Florida, and command of a series of captured Union ships that culminated in seizing the US Revenue Cutter Caleb Cushing in Portland, Maine.

Landes was born in Ware, Massachusetts to Charles Sanford Knight and Cordelia Cutter.

Along with classmate Charles Noyes, Cutter re-arranged the library collection on the shelves into broad subject categories during the 1857-58 school year.

Charles Cutter died on September 6, 1903 in Walpole, New Hampshire.
