Henry Charles Keith Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne ( 4 January 1845 – 3 June 1927 ) was a British politician and Irish peer who served successively as the fifth Governor General of Canada, Viceroy of India, Secretary of State for War, and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

Wood is the eldest son of Charles Wood, 2nd Earl of Halifax, son of E. F. L. Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax, Viceroy of India and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

The first reference to the Spanish and the San Bernardino Strait is during the 1543 – 1545 expedition of Ruy Gomez de Villalobos, who was sent out by the Viceroy of Mexico under orders from the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to establish a Spanish colony near the Portuguese-occupied Spice Islands of Moluccas.

Charles Hardinge, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, ( 20 June 1858 – 2 August 1944 ) was a British diplomat and statesman who served as Viceroy of India from 1910 to 1916.

He was made the Viceroy of Naples in 1495 by king Charles VIII of France after the conquest, losing it that same year to an allied Neapolitan / Spanish army commanded by Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba.

It was created in 1859 for the Conservative politician and then Viceroy of India, Charles Canning, 2nd Viscount Canning.

Charles withdrew towards Barcelona, and with him the Viceroy, the whole administration and surviving troops.

He was hunted by the colonial police due to his active participation in the failed assassination attempt directed at the Governor General and Viceroy Lord Charles Hardinge in Delhi ( the bomb was actually thrown by Basanta Kumar Biswas, a disciple of Amarendra Chatterjee ).

He was taken to Quito, and from prison he sent three petitions to the Court in Madrid, which decreed, on Charles III's behalf, that the case was to be taken to the Viceroy of Bogotá.

One year later Viceroy Philibert of Orange, ruling for King Charles V of Spain, finally defeated the Aquilan rebels and ordered the city to build a fortress in the highest spot North of the city, exactly where in 1401 King Ladislaus had built a garrison to control the unruly and rebellious Aquilans.

The Archaeological Survey of India was founded in 1861 under British colonial administration by Sir Alexander Cunningham with the help of the then Viceroy Charles John Canning.

The fort was named Fort Canning after Viscount Charles John Canning, who was then Governor-General and the first Viceroy of India.
