In many Christadelphian hymn books a sizeable proportion of hymns are drawn from the Scottish Psalter and non-Christadelphian hymn-writers including Isaac Watts, Charles Wesley, William Cowper and John Newton.

His major works include The Chinese Convert ( 1687 ); a series of four portraits of Isaac Newton painted at various junctures of the latter's life ; a series of ten reigning European monarchs, including King Louis XIV of France ; over 40 " Kit-cat portraits " of members of the Kit-Cat Club ; and ten " beauties " of the court of William III, to match a similar series of ten beauties of the court of Charles II painted by his predecessor as court painter, Sir Peter Lely.

Around the same time, Charles Elton pioneered the concept of food chains in his classical book Animal Ecology.

In 1927 Charles Sutherland Elton, a British ecologist, gave the first working definition of the niche concept.

Two food webs about herring were produced by Victor Summerhayes and Charles Elton and Alister Hardy in 1923 and 1924.

Charles Elton subsequently pioneered the concept of food cycles, food chains, and food size in his classical 1927 book " Animal Ecology "; Elton's ' food cycle ' was replaced by ' food web ' in a subsequent ecological text.
