The club have consistently affirmed their desire to keep Chelsea at their current home, but Chelsea have nonetheless been linked with a move to various nearby sites, including the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, Battersea Power Station and the Chelsea Barracks.

Rich finds such as the Battersea Shield, found in the Thames near Chelsea, suggest the area was important ; there may have been important settlements at Egham and Brentford, and there was a hillfort at Uppall, but no city in the area of the Roman London, the present day City of London.

More recently, some decades after the end of large scale local industry, residential overspill from fashionable Chelsea, the area to the north across the Thames, has changed the character of much of Battersea.

Further north towards Chelsea is the Surrey Lane Estate, and situated on Battersea Park Road is the Doddington and Rollo Estate.

Battersea Park, Osterley Park, and Wisley were suggested ; one proposal was that Chelsea should be limited to plant sales, and the sundries rerouted elsewhere ; the firm of Land Use Consultants was hired to prepare a feasibility study, and after examining all these options, concluded that the Show should stay at Chelsea.

The area is home to several open spaces including Albert Bridge Gardens, Battersea Bridge Gardens, Chelsea Embankment Gardens, Royal Hospital Chelsea: the grounds of which are used by the annual Chelsea Flower Show and Chelsea Physic Garden.

Today, Cheyne Walk forms part of the A3212 and A3220 trunk roads ; it extends eastwards from the southern end of Finborough Road past the Battersea and Albert Bridges, after which the A3212 becomes the Chelsea Embankment.

Whilst this was under construction the West End of London and Crystal Palace Railway also planned a line from Crystal Palace to a new station at Battersea Wharf, at the southern end of the new Chelsea Bridge.

It is situated on a sharp bend in the river, and links Battersea south of the river with Chelsea to the north.

Battersea, listed as Patricesy ( St Peter's Water ) in the Domesday Book and first mentioned in records of 693 AD, on the south bank of the river opposite Chelsea, was by contrast low and marshy land, prone to flooding.

Although Chelsea and Battersea had been linked by ferry since at least 1550, the nearest fixed links between the two were Putney Bridge, upstream and opened in 1729, and Westminster Bridge, downstream, opened in 1746.

In 1763 John, Earl Spencer, purchased the manor of Battersea, and consequently acquired ownership of the ferry service between Chelsea and Battersea.

From Battersea Bridge in the west, the Thames Embankment includes sections of Cheyne Walk, Chelsea Embankment, Grosvenor Road, Millbank and Victoria Tower Gardens.

Chelsea Bridge is a bridge over the River Thames in west London, connecting Chelsea on the north bank to Battersea on the south bank.

The first Chelsea Bridge was proposed in the 1840s as part of a major development of marshlands on the south bank of the Thames into the new Battersea Park.

The club was established on 21 March 1891 ( in Chelsea ), as a rival to the older Arts Club in Mayfair, on the instigation of the artist James Abbot McNeill Whistler, who had been a ( sometimes controversial ) member of the older club.

The Chelsea Beach Branch, which operated only during the summer, ended operations in 1891, although the rails remained in place until the 1920s.

As early as 1891, James Whistler, one of the Arts Club's leading members, broke away to found the rival Chelsea Arts Club.
