Chungnam is the only province outside the Seoul National Capital Area to be served by Seoul Subway Line 1, with multi-million dollar projects such as New Asan City centered on the newly-built Cheonan-Asan Station, that connects Chungnam's largest city, Cheonan, to Seoul Station in less than 30 minutes via the KTX bullet train.

There is also a link from Asan Station to the KTX network at Cheonan Asan Station.

By the end of 2008, the new alignment was in service from Cheonan via Asan and Hongseong to Sinseong, from Jupo to Nampo, and from Ganchi to Janghang, and electrification was put in service on the first 19. 4 km between Cheonan and Sinchang, after Asan, on December 15, 2008.

The city of Asan shares a station for the KTX high speed trains with the neighbouring city of Cheonan called Cheonan-Asan Station.

Since the extension of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway ( Korail commuter ) to Asan, Chungcheongnam-do and Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, some have classified Asan, Cheonan, Chuncheon as now within the SMA, but not within the SNCA.

Hanja are often also used as a form of shorthand in newspaper headlines, advertisements, and on signs, for example the banner at the funeral for the sailors lost in the sinking of ROKS Cheonan ( PCC-772 ).

In May 2010, due to the ROKS Cheonan sinking incident and South Korea's response, North Korea severed ties with South Korea and shut down the Consultative Office in the zone, however existing activities in the zone maintained production activities, and transport and telephones to South Korea are operating normally.

Cheonan is known for small walnut-shaped and flavored cakes, or hodugwaja ( 호두과자 ), which are produced in the area.

Different areas in Cheonan are also served by Seoul Subway Line 1, which began running between Seoul and Cheonan.

To further complicate and intensify strains between the two nations, the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan in March 2010, killing 46 seamen, is as of May 20, 2010 claimed by a team of researchers around the world to have been caused by a North Korean torpedo, which the North denies.

The city is home to two football clubs: Cheonan City FC of the National League and Cheonan FC of the K3 League.

Cheonan ( Cheonan-si, sometimes spelled Chonan or Ch ' onan ) () is a city located in the northeast corner of South Chungcheong, a province of South Korea, and is 83. 6 km south of the capital, Seoul.

Jochiwon is conveniently located between three major Korean cities: Daejeon, Cheonan and Cheongju.

Baekseok Culture University, formerly Cheonan College of Foreign Studies, is a Christian private college located in the city center of Cheonan, a major city of South Chungcheong province in western South Korea.

Cheonan National Technical College is a public vocational college located in Cheonan City, a major city of South Chungcheong province in western South Korea.

Baekseok University is a private Christian institution of higher education, located in Cheonan City, in northern South Chungcheong province, South Korea.

It campus is located in a rural area of Cheonan City, in South Chungcheong province.

There is an extension campus, which is located in Cheonan, a city in South Chungcheong province, and which sits on the face of hills and a lake.

Apart from Cheongju, Chungju, and Gongju, other large or notable cities in the modern-day Chungcheong region include Daejeon, Cheonan and Janghang.

As a result, three clubs were evicted from Seoul to other cities, Ilhwa Chunma moved to the city of Cheonan and changed its name to Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma.

Undeterred by the hostile conditions, graduates were generated and posted to kindergartens in cities including Hamhung, Hweryung, Busan, Masan, Jeonju, Anak, Cheonan, Sariwon, and Milyang.

Songtan connects to many other cities ; Osan, Suwon, or Seoul to the north ; and Pyeongtaek, Cheonan, and Daejeon to the south.

The museum was not constructed here, but rather moved from Seoul in February 2004 to its current home in the Ministry of Information and Communication Officials Training Institute in Cheonan.

Many activities and events happen during the day, including an official ceremony with the president in attendance that takes place at the Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan or at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.

It comprised the following eight institutions: Africa Nazarene University ( Ongata Rongai, Kenya ); Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary ( Taytay, Rizal, Philippines ); Brazil Nazarene College ( Campinas, Brazil ); Korea Nazarene University ( Cheonan, South Korea ); Nazarene Theological College, ( Brisbane, Australia ); Nazarene Theological College, ( Manchester, England ); Nazarene Theological Seminary ( Kansas City, Missouri ); and Seminario Nazareno de las Americas ( SENDAS ) ( San Jose, Costa Rica ).

Thus the City of Cheonan was born, comprising the populations of Cheonan-gun, Cheonan-eup and Hwanseong-myeon.

The Cheonan campus includes the largest hospital in the region and one of Korea's top dental programs, as well as the only 4-year Mongolian Language and Literature Department in Korea.

Despite requests from the South Korea government to put North Korea back on the list after it sunk the Navy ship the ROKS Cheonan in 2010, the Obama administration stated that it will not do so because the act was conducted by only the North Korean military and was thus not an act of terror.

It is common when leaving from or passing through Cheonan Station by train to see many merchants selling hodugwaja.

In Cheonan, local temples decorate their buildings and grounds with illuminated paper lanterns, and much of the city centre is closed to traffic for a parade followed by musical acts and a traditional drumming show.

The first is Cheonan Station and the second, ( served by the KTX high speed railway ) is Cheonan-Asan Station.

At its height, Mahan covered much of the Han River Basin and the modern-day provinces of Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeolla, although political unity was strongest led by Mokji state ( 목지국, 目支國 ) in Cheonan, Chungcheong.

Within South Korea, the Yonam Institute maintains sisterhood relationships with Cheonan Yonam College, which was also established by the Yonam Educational Foundation.

The school opened as Cheonan College of Foreign Studies in 1994, established by the Baekseok Educational Foundation.

* Eastern Endeavor 2010, the first exercise hosted by the Republic of Korea ( in Busan ) after endorsing the initiative and arguably held in response to the ROKS Cheonan sinking.

On March 26, 2010, ROKS Cheonan, a Pohang class corvette was sunk by a North Korean torpedo, resulting in death of 46 sailors near Baengnyeong Island, in the vicinity of the Northern Limit Line ( NLL ).

On May 28, 2010, the official ( North ) Korean Central News Agency stated that " it is the United States that is behind the case of ' Cheonan.

The Gyeongbu Line is six-tracked from Seoul to Guro, four-tracked from Guro to Cheonan, and double-tracked from Cheonan all the way to Busan.

In 2010, a South Korean Navy warship, the Cheonan, carrying 104 personnel, was sunk off the west coast of the country, near Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea.

The line connects Cheonan ( on the Gyeongbu Line ) to the railway junction city of Iksan.

The original Janghang Line opened along its full length between Cheonan and Janghang on June 1, 1922.

Work started in 1997 from Cheonan.

The Cheonan – Sinchang section of this line is a part of Seoul Subway's Line 1.

KHSRCA started construction of the Seoul – Busan Gyeongbu High Speed Railway ( Gyeongbu HSR ) on June 30, 1992, on the long section from Cheonan to Daejeon, which was intended for use as test track.

As a result, Ilhwa Chunma became Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma based in Cheonan, 95 km away, LG Cheetahs became Anyang LG Cheetahs based in Anyang, a satellite city of Seoul, 21 km away and Yukong Kokkiri became Bucheon SK based in Bucheon, a satellite city of Seoul, 25 km away.

In 2000, Cheonan Ilhwa Chunma moved to Seongnam, a satellite city of Seoul, 28 km away then becaom Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, In 2004, Anyang LG Cheetahs returned Seoul, assuming a small part of the construction costs of the vacant Seoul World Cup Stadium and renamed as FC Seoul.

Despite the Lee Myung-bak government expressing a verbal anti-North Korean stance, the head of the government-funded Korea Institute for National Unification, Kim Tae-u, proposed that the South Korean government renegotiate on the Mount Kumgang Tourist Region with North Korea without any official apology on North Korea's military actions towards the ROKS Cheonan sinking and the Bombardment of Yeonpyeong.

Seoul Subway Line 1, which connects Seoul with Cheonan, passes through the town, as does Line 4, which intersects with Line 1 at Geumjeong Station.
