* February 9 – First horse race held at Chester Racecourse, the oldest in use in England.

The area between the river and the city walls here is known as the Roodee, and contains Chester Racecourse which holds a series of horse races and other events.

An annual music festival started in 2011-Chester Rocks, held on the grounds of the Chester Racecourse is due to continue in July 2012.
