Chilhowie is a town in Smyth County, Virginia, United States. Chilhowie, pronounced Chil ·´ how · ee, the Cherokee word meaning “ valley of many deer ,” was adopted as the town ’ s name when the town became incorporated in 1913.

* June 19 – Brasenose College, University of Oxford, is founded by a lawyer, Sir Richard Sutton, of Prestbury, Cheshire, and the Bishop of Lincoln, William Smyth.
The county is named after Alexander Smyth, a general during the War of 1812 who was elected to the state Senate and House of Delegates, and was a Representative to the United States Congress.
