Hercule Poirot and Lord Peter Whimsey ( the respective creations of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers ) have retained Holmes' egotism but not his zest for life and eccentric habits.

Christie describes entirely different working methods for every book in her autobiography thus contradicts this claim, more likely from theatre, screen film and TV adaptations that vary perpetrators to keep viewers coming back.

In six stories, Christie allows the murderer to escape justice ( and in the case of the last three, implicitly almost approves of their crimes ); these are The Witness for the Prosecution, Five Little Pigs, The Man in the Brown Suit, Murder on the Orient Express, Curtain and The Unexpected Guest.

So as to not influence the funding of the archaeological excavations, Christie would always pay for her own board and lodging and her travel expenses, and supported excavations as an anonymous sponsor.

Many of the settings for Agatha Christie ’ s books were directly inspired by the many archaeological field seasons spent in the Middle East on the sites managed by her second husband Max Mallowan.

Christie ’ s life within the archaeological world not only shaped her settings and characters for her books but also in the issues she highlights.

The large amount of travel done by Christie and Mallowan has not only made for a great writing theme, as shown in her famous novel: The Murder on the Orient Express, but also tied into the idea of archaeology as an adventure that has become so important in today ’ s popular culture as described by Cornelius Holtorf in his book Archaeology is a Brand.

It is therefore better to assume that Christie provided no authoritative chronology for Poirot's retirement, but assumed that he could either be an active detective, a consulting detective or a retired detective as the needs of the immediate case required.

Like Agatha Christie, she isn't overly fond of the detective she is most famous for creating – in Ariadne's case the Finnish sleuth Sven Hjerson.

A 1945 radio series of at least 13 original half-hour episodes ( none of which apparently adapt any Christie stories ) transferred Poirot from London to New York and starred character actor Harold Huber, perhaps better known for his appearances as a police officer in various Charlie Chan films.

Agatha Christie attributed the inspiration for the character of Miss Marple to a number of sources: Miss Marple was " the sort of old lady who would have been rather like some of my grandmother's Ealing cronies – old ladies whom I have met in so many villages where I have gone to stay as a girl ".

The last film is not based on any Christie work but displays a few plot elements from They Do It With Mirrors ( viz., the ship is used as a reform school for wayward boys and one of the teachers uses them as a crime force ), and there is a kind of salute to The Mousetrap.

American TV was the setting for the first dramatic portrayal of Miss Marple with Gracie Fields, the legendary British actress, playing her in a 1956 episode of Goodyear TV Playhouse based on A Murder Is Announced, the 1950 Christie novel.

Many of the most popular books of the Golden Age were written by Agatha Christie, who produced a long series of books featuring her detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, amongst others, and usually including a complex puzzle for the reader to try to unravel.

In the later chapters this manifests itself as unexpected trips to times such as 2018 ( in an earlier version of the time travel lab ), 1933 ( where an enlightening conversation about the mysteries of Agatha Christie is overheard ) and to 1395 ( where Ned notices a resemblance between Mary Botoner and someone he knows in 2057 ).

While details are only very occasionally anachronistic ( such as the mentions of hanging, which had been abolished in Great Britain in 1965 ) they often have implications for the series as a whole that can only be dismissed by remembering that Christie probably intended the novel to be published earlier than it was ; the fifth paragraph (" Wounded in the war that for me would always be the war -- the war that was wiped out now by a second and more desperate war.

From 8 November 2001-24 March 2002, The British Museum had an exhibit named “ Agatha Christie and Archaeology: Mystery in Mesopotamia ”, which presented a fascinating look at the secret life of Agatha Christie and the influences of archaeology in her life and works.

His reading ranged from Agatha Christie to The Book Of Job and he had an insatiable interest in his fellow-creatures, while his letters were full of gossip about new politicians and old men of letters with whom he had been intimately thrown six decades before.

While accompanying Mallowan on countless archaeological trips ( spending up to 3 – 4 months at a time in Syria and Iraq at excavation sites at Ur, Ninevah, Tell Arpachiyah, Chagar Bazar, Tell Brak, and Nimrud ), Christie not only wrote novels and short stories, but also contributed work to the archaeological sites, more specifically to the archaeological restoration and labeling of ancient exhibits which includes tasks such as cleaning and conserving delicate ivory pieces, reconstructing pottery, developing photos from early excavations which later led to taking photographs of the site and its findings, and taking field notes.

During Christie and Mallowan's time in the Middle East, along with their time spent among the many tombs, temples, and museums, there was also a large amount of time spent traveling to and from Mallowan's sites.

The characters in this book in particular are also based on archaeologists Christie knew from her personal experiences on excavations sites.

Christie wrote little of Poirot ’ s childhood though in Three Act Tragedy she writes that he comes from a large family with little wealth.

On 22 February 1945, " speaking from London, Agatha Christie introduced the initial broadcast of the Poirot series via shortwave.

The most common explanation suggests that the name was taken from the railway station in Marple, Stockport, through which Christie passed, with the alternative account that Christie took it from the home of a Marple family who lived at Marple Hall, near her sister Madge's home at Abney Hall.

Christie also used material from her fictional creation, spinster Caroline Sheppard, who appeared in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

When she made it, the results, starring Margaret Rutherford, were popular and successful light comedies, but were disappointing to Christie herself ; nevertheless, Agatha Christie dedicated the novel The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side to Rutherford.

She presented the character as a bold and eccentric old lady, different from the prim and birdlike character Christie created in her novels.

In Scorsese on Scorsese, edited by David M. Thompson and Ian Christie, the director talks about how much of the film arose from his feeling that movies are like dreams, or like taking dope and that he tried to induce the feeling of being almost awake.
