Class 450 Desiro trains are now being used on the Portsmouth Direct Line for London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour services in place of Class 444 Desiro units on some services.

Trains are formed of modern Siemens Class 450 electric multiple units ( primarily blue in colour ) and Class 444 ( primarily white ).

These were withdrawn by February 2007 ; Class 444 5-DES, Class 450 4-DES and Class 455 trains are now used.

Post-privatisation, the entire fleet was operated by South West Trains up until February 2007, when the Class 442 services were replaced by Class 444 and Class 450 Desiros.

However in 2004, when the Class 444 " Desiro " trains had been brought into service, the " Wessex Electrics " were again used solely on the Weymouth line.

Class 444 Desiro electric multiple-unit trains were built in Austria by Siemens AG in 2003-04 for use in Britain on express passenger services operated by South West Trains ( SWT ).

This was originally to be split as 100 four-car Class 450 / 0 outer-suburban units, 32 five-car Class 450 / 2 inner-suburban units, and 45 five-car Class 444 express units.

The Class 444 fleet was built at Siemens ' Vienna plant.

A new variable-stiffness hydraulic bush is being fitted to the whole Class 444 fleet so as to reduce track damage and thus infrastructure maintenance costs.

The first Class 444 units entered service with SWT in early 2004.

The Class 444 units were also used regularly on Sunday-only Bournemouth stopping services, Waterloo to Southampton services and the Brockenhurst to Wareham shuttle service.

During 2007, the Class 444 units replaced the Wessex Electrics ( Class 442 ) on the Weymouth line.

It hoped to begin these services in 2013 using Class 407 ICE units, with three trains per day each way — morning, midday and afternoon.

The all-time speed record for steam trains is held by an LNER Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive of the LNER in the United Kingdom, number 4468 Mallard, which pulling six carriages ( plus a dynamometer car ) reached 126 mph ( 203 km / h ) on a slight downhill gradient down Stoke Bank on 3 July 1938.

Up to the time of closure for refurbishment ( see below ) the Class 482 trains carried the original blue British Rail Network SouthEast livery that they had when they were introduced, despite having been part of London Underground for a number of years.

Thameslink rolling stock is mainly the 86 Class 319 trains built by BREL between 1987 and 1990.

Four Class 319 trains had been transferred from Southern in December 2008 and the last four followed in March 2009, from which point all Class 319 sets were available for use on Thameslink.
