Leroy Eldridge Cleaver ( August 31, 1935 – May 1, 1998 ) better known as Eldridge Cleaver, was a writer and political activist who became an early leader of the Black Panther Party.

In the essays, Cleaver traces his own development from a " supermasculine menial " to a radical black liberationist, and his essays became highly influential in the black power movement.

Cleaver returned to the United States in 1975, became a born again Christian and subsequently renounced his ultra-radical past.

In the early 1980s, Cleaver became disillusioned with what he saw as the commercial nature of mainstream evangelical Christianity and examined alternatives, including Sun Myung Moon's campus ministry organization CARP, and Mormonism.

In 1971, Brown became a member of the Party's Central Committee as Minister of Information, replacing the expelled Eldridge Cleaver.

Avakian, in different ways, and over a period of time, became deeply engaged in the movements of the times: the anti-war movement, the student movement, the black liberation movement, the developing women ’ s movement and the incipient new communist movement in the U. S. Avakian's ideological and political development can be traced through these rebellious times, as he developed political relationships and friendships with many of the key figures of that era, engaging in many debates with the various trends in the movement, including working closely with the Black Panther Party, particularly Huey P. Newton and Eldridge Cleaver.

Cleaver was a Ramparts editor when he witnessed a confrontation between Huey Newton and a police officer outside the magazine's office in February 1967 ; he soon became the Black Panther Party's minister of information.

One of his most infamous pranks with the Cleaver boys involved fastening a chain around the rear axle of their friend Clarence " Lumpy " Rutherford's car, causing unplanned damage as the entire third member and wheels became detached when he tried to move the car.

Cleaver was born on August 31, 1935, and therefore would not have been the requisite 35 years of age until more than a year after Inauguration Day 1969.

On the night of April 6, 1968, Bobby was killed by Oakland Police officers after Eldridge Cleaver led him and twelve other Panthers in an ambush of the Oakland Police, during which two officers were seriously wounded by multiple gunshot wounds.
