The partition of Ireland in 1922 made Clones a border post on the railway, which combined with road competition to cause the Great Northern to decline.

CIÉ withdrew freight services from the Cavan line in 1959 and from the Dundalk line in 1960, leaving Clones with no railway at all.

CIÉ took over the remaining section of line between Clones, Monaghan and Glaslough in 1958 but withdrew goods services between Monaghan and Glaslough in 1959 and between Clones and Monaghan in 1960, leaving Monaghan with no railway service.

Cavan once had two separate railway stations, linking the Great Northern Railway ( GNR ) and Midland Great Western Railway, then an end junction of the Belfast-Cavan route linking Clones with a branch line to Crossdoney and Killeshandra.

The GNR closed Clones station to passenger traffic on 14 October 1957.
