Enraged, Dreyfus means to seek vengeance on the world by destroying England ; as he prepares for this, Clouseau, who has been thrown into the castle's barnyard, is literally catapulted onto Dreyfus's doomsday machine.

Inspector Clouseau ( Peter Sellers ) is called to the country home of a Paris plutocrat, Benjamin Ballon ( George Sanders ), to investigate the murder of his Spanish chauffeur, Miguel.

The 1982 film Trail of the Pink Panther utilized outtakes and alternate footage of Sellers as Clouseau in a new storyline in which a reporter ( played by Joanna Lumley ) investigates Clouseau's disappearance.

It is played on a silent film era style " honky tonk " piano, and accompanies a climactic scene in which the incompetent police detective Inspector Clouseau is involved in a multi-vehicle chase with the antagonists.

" They refer especially to the Pink Panthers Clouseau, developed with the comedic skills of Peter Sellers, as a character " perfectly consistent " with his " absurdist view of the world, because he has no faith in anything and constantly adapts.

Clouseau is the bumbling and incompetent police inspector of the French Sûreté, whose investigations are marked with chaos and destruction that he himself largely causes.

Despite this, Clouseau does appear to show some awareness that he is not the most competent or intelligent person, as he is notably embarrassed by and quick to brush aside his more extreme acts of clumsiness with phrases such as " I know that ", and attempts to appear elegant and refined regardless of what calamity he has just caused.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again continues the story from the end of The Return of the Pink Panther, featuring the now-insane Dreyfus creating a crime syndicate and constructing a doomsday machine with the intention of using it to blackmail the world to kill Clouseau.

Despite the failure of Curse, Edwards attempted to revive the series a decade later with Son of the Pink Panther, in which it is revealed that Clouseau had illegitimate children by Maria Gambrelli ( a character who first appeared in A Shot in the Dark ).

A running gag with Clouseau in this and the following film is that he randomly attacks his partner to keep him on his toes, only to be successfully countered, and complimenting him.

Reviews were poor, with Binoche being cynically dubbed " Cathy Clouseau " and being derided for her " franglais " accent.

Because the Soviets are flouting diplomatic immunity, Inspector Clouseau is assigned to recover it in a clandestine, non-cover operation, which annoys him as he was scheduled to go on an ocean cruise to Ireland with his daughter, Agatha, to see the first performance of Riverdance.

Although all the evidence points to Gambrelli as the killer, Clouseau stubbornly refuses to admit that she is guilty, having fallen madly in love with her.

As Clouseau continues to bungle the case, Commissioner Dreyfus becomes increasingly agitated, resulting in his accidentally cutting off his thumb and stabbing himself with a letter-opener.

Clouseau gathers all the suspects together, and it comes out that Ballon, his wife Dominique, Madame LaFarge, Pierre the driver, Simone the maid are guilty of murder: each of them having killed one of the earlier murder victims, with Maurice the manservant as a blackmailer, and Maria, who is innocent of any crime.

As with most of the other Clouseau films, A Shot in the Dark featured an animated opening credits sequence produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises.

Although these scenes are frequently proffered as classic examples of corpsing, it is worth noting that Schell has maintained in interviews that she considered it in character for Lady Lytton to be amused at Clouseau, whom she does not see as a serious threat ( an attitude made explicit during her banter with her husband at the film's climax in her hotel room ).

Clouseau disguises himself in a heavy cast while on the flight, which causes complications in the air and on land and leads to an awkward introduction to the Scotland Yard detectives who meet him at Heathrow.

Meanwhile, Dreyfus learns from Scotland Yard that Libyan terrorists may have marked Clouseau for assassination once he announces his intent to visit the scene of the crime in Lugash.

Director Blake Edwards dedicated the film to Sellers, " the one and only Inspector Clouseau ".

The bumbling Inspector Clouseau was a character Sellers would continue to return to over the next decade.

Edwards is best known for directing most of the comedy film series The Pink Panther, and all of the entries starring Peter Sellers as the inept Inspector Clouseau.

In 2006, he had a prominent role in the remake of The Pink Panther and its sequel, playing Gilbert Ponton, the partner of Inspector Clouseau opposite Steve Martin, and also portrayed Captain Bezu Fache in the Ron Howard film The Da Vinci Code.

Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau () ( formerly Inspector ) is a fictional character in Blake Edwards ' The Pink Panther series.

Though the animated character was never given a name, he is clearly based on Clouseau and the cartoons later appeared as part of the animated Pink Panther Show series.

Sellers said in several interviews that the secret of Clouseau ’ s character was his tremendous ego.

His favourite example of Clouseau ’ s ego was that, whenever someone said, " Phone call for Inspector Clouseau ", Clouseau would reply, " Ah yes, that would be for ME.

" Sellers maintained that Clouseau ’ s ego is what made the character's klutziness funnier because of his quest to remain elegant and refined while causing chaos everywhere he turned.

As portrayed by Sellers, Clouseau ’ s French accent became steadily more exaggerated in successive films ( for example, pronouncing " room " as " reum "; " Pope " as " Peup "; " bomb " as " beumb "; and " bumps " as " beumps "), and a frequent running gag in the movies was that even French characters would have difficulty understanding what he was saying.

Much of that humour was of course lost in the French dubbing: in order to keep some of Seller's characterization, the French post-synchronization gave Clouseau an odd-sounding, nasal voice.

In his earliest appearances, Clouseau is actually ( only slightly ) less inept and exaggerated ; some of the above character elements were not added until the 1970s.
