The French-crewed C-47s were used for this operation, in conjunction with C-46 Commandos leased from Civil Air Transport.

The paratroopers were then relieved by Commandos from the 1st Special Service Brigade.

During the Second World War, on 25 February 1941, in the course of Operation Abstention, British Commandos occupied the island, but Italian forces from Rhodes recaptured it some days later.

The Parachute Regiment has its origins in the elite force of Commandos set up by the British Army at the request of Winston Churchill during the initial phase of the Second World War.

During the war the British Army Commandos spawned several other famous British units such as the Special Air Service, the Special Boat Service and the Parachute Regiment.

Other units of the British armed forces that can trace their origins to the British Commandos of the Second World War are the Parachute Regiment, the Special Air Service, and the Special Boat Service.

Specific regiments and corps of the British Armed Forces have become increasingly popular as career choices for former pupils, leading to many ad-hoc Old Boys ' Associations: the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, the Army's technical Corps, the Brigade of Guards, and particularly the Royal Marines ' Commandos and the Parachute Regiment are popular destinations for both enlisted personnel and officers.

With the design sanctioned by 1 Cdo Bn's Commanding Officer, Tan Kim Peng Clarence, it is differentiated by a crimson velvet backing for Commandos, while those of the Commando Parachute Jump Instructors have a golden velvet backing.

The Parachutist Badge awarded upon successful completion of the Basic Airborne Course conducted by the Parachute Training Wing, School of Commandos, is also known affectionately as the Silver Wings.

The army commanders not only had to manage the new armies, but also a new type of soldier in formations that had been created for special service, which included the Special Air Service, Army Commandos and the Parachute Regiment.

The British Army did not form a Light Division for service during World War II, but the ethos of the Light Division was carried on in new infantry formations such as the Commandos, Parachute Regiment and the Chindits all lightly armed fast and agile units.

These Special Operations forces will include the Airborne Regiment, the Commandos Regiment, the Navy Commandos Regiment, and the Counter-Sabotage Regiment of the Military Intelligence.

They along with other Special Forces units & Commandos ( Sri Lanka Army Commando Regiment ) played a vital role in eliminating the LTTE, including Velupillai Prabhakaran, the founder and leader of the Tamil Tigers.
