Community colleges carry on the tradition of adult education, which was established in Australia around mid 19th century when evening classes were held to help adults enhance their numeracy and literacy skills.

The motivation for community colleges was a new way of thinking about education and training in Canada ( more specifically in Ontario ), and was economically based as opposed to the much earlier start in the United States of Junior and Community Colleges which was driven by an integrative social policy.

Community colleges in Malaysia are a network of educational institutions whereby vocational and technical skills training could be provided at all levels for school leavers before they entered the workforce.

* The Association of Community College Trustees ( ACCT ) has provided education for community college boards of directors and advocacy for community colleges since 1972.

ACCT President and CEO J. Noah Brown has authored a book about the past, present, and future of community colleges called Charting a New Course for Community Colleges: Aligning Policies with Practice.

* The mission of the Community College Research Center from Teachers College at Columbia University is to " conduct research on the major issues affecting community colleges in the United States and to contribute to the development of practice and policy that expands access to higher education and promotes success for all students.

* The Center for Community College Student Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin administers surveys and provides data analysis support to member colleges regarding various factors of student engagement and involvement in community colleges in the United States and Canada.

In 1961, the New York State Legislature established the City University of New York, uniting what had become seven municipal colleges at the time: The City College of New York, Hunter College, Brooklyn College, Queens College, Staten Island Community College, Bronx Community College and Queensborough Community College.

The Seattle Community College District is a group of community colleges located in Seattle, Washington.

It consists of three colleges — North Seattle Community College, Seattle Central Community College ( including the Wood Construction Center and Seattle Maritime Academy ), South Seattle Community College ( including the Georgetown Campus ) — and the Seattle Vocational Institute.

Pierce College is one of the nine colleges of the Los Angeles Community College District, and is accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

Several community colleges are found in the metro area, including J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and John Tyler Community College ( Chesterfield County ).

Oswego County is also home to two colleges: State University of New York at Oswego located in the Town of Oswego and the Fulton Branch Campus of Cayuga County Community College located in the City of Fulton.

For post-16 education, students travel to colleges in other local towns, for example Frome Community College, Strode College in Street or Norton Radstock College in Midsomer Norton.

As the institutional and normative " umbrella " of regional integration that shelters these agreements as well as the subregional ones ( Andean Community, MERCOSUR, G-3 Free Trade Agreement, Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, etc.

Community development, often linked with Community Work or Community Planning, is often formally conducted by non-government organisations ( NGOs ), universities or government agencies to progress the social well-being of local, regional and, sometimes, national communities.

As an example of Ghana's interest in regional cooperation, the country enthusiastically endorsed formation of the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS ) in 1975.

Guinea has been active in efforts toward regional integration and cooperation, especially regarding the Organization of African Unity and the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS ).

It played an important role in the founding of the Caribbean Community and Common Market ( CARICOM ), but its status as the organization's poorest member limits its ability to exert leadership in regional activities.

It is a member of many regional economic organizations including the Southern African Development Community ( SADC ) and the Southern African Customs Union ( SACU ).

It participates in the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS ) and the West African Economic Monetary Union ( UEMOA ) for regional economic integration ; Liptako-Gourma Authority, which seeks to develop the contiguous areas of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso ; the Niger River Commission ; the Permanent Interstate Committee for drought control in the Sahel ( CILSS ); and the Senegal River Valley Development Organization ( OMVS ).

Many Central American and South American nationals can travel within their respective regional economic zones, such as Mercosur and the Andean Community of Nations, or on a bilateral basis ( e. g., between Chile and Peru, between Brazil and Chile ), without passports, presenting instead their national ID cards, or, for short stays, their voter-registration cards.

: within the capital's regional assembly however, there also exist two so-called Community Commissions ( fixed numbers, not an automatic repartition of the regional assembly ), a Dutch-speaking one and a Francophone one, for various matters split up by linguistic community but under Brussels ' regional competence, and even ' joint community commissions ' consisting of both for certain institutions that could be split up but are not.

It is part of the Caribbean Community ( CARICOM ), a regional co-operative Trade and Common Market agreement which became operational in August 1973.

Since it was not a province with a separate historical regional identity but part of the cultural region of Castile, it was considered a natural province that would compose the soon-to-be Community of Castile – La Mancha.

Besides Andalusia, Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, which identified themselves as nationalities, other communities have also taken that denomination in accordance to their historical regional identity, such as the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, and Aragon.

A Community Currency is often used as synonym for complementary currency, local currency, regional currency, alternative currency, auxiliary currencies, and private currencies.

However, the DRC being a member of the SADC ( Southern Africa Development Community ) organisation, President Laurent Kabila called this regional organisation to the rescue.

In cases where direct UN involvement is not considered appropriate or feasible, the Council may consider authorizing regional organizations such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO ), the Economic Community of West African States, or other coalitions of willing countries to undertake peacekeeping or peace-enforcement tasks.

In international government, the city of Lima is home to the headquarters of the Andean Community of Nations and the South American Community of Nations, along with other regional and international organizations.

Projects for improved economic and political cooperation are also happening at a regional level with the Arab Maghreb Union, the Economic Community of West African States, the Economic Community of Central African States the Southern African Development Community and the East African Community.

Higher education can be attained within a reasonable driving distance at either Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, IL or the nearest four-year institution, Ashford University in Clinton, IA ( about 35 – 45 minutes away ).

The city has five major institutions of higher learning: Concordia College ( private liberal arts college ), Minnesota State University Moorhead ( public university ), Minnesota State Community and Technical College ( two-year to four-year technical college ), Globe University / Minnesota School of Business, ( private college ), and Rasmussen College ( a two-to four-year college ).

Central Oregon Community College ( COCC ) and the OSU-Cascades Campus of Oregon State University ( OSU ) serve the community with both two-and four-year programs.

Other significant institutions of higher learning located in the region are Wytheville Community College located in the nearby city of Wytheville, Virginia ; Radford University, a four-year public, state-funded university located in Radford, Virginia and Virginia Tech, which is a public land grant polytechnic university in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Bowling Green State University ( Firelands Campus ) and Lorain County Community College, both accredited schools offering four-year and advanced degrees, are located within a twenty-minute drive of Vermilion.

Bothell is home to Cascadia Community College and the University of Washington, Bothell, which became a four-year degree-granting institution in the fall of 2006.

Community colleges award associate degrees of different types, some intended to prepare students to transfer to four-year schools ( e. g. Associate of Arts ( AA ), Associate of Science ( AS )), and others intended to provide vocational skills and training for students wishing to enter into or advance in a profession.

Some awards Under Construction has won include six first-place awards, two second-place awards and one third-place award in the Community College National Literary Magazine competition and also nine first-place awards in the Society for Professional Journalists Competition which includes four-year colleges throughout the Midwest.

Like many community colleges, Community College of Philadelphia offers dual admissions programs and transfer agreements for transferring to a four-year college or university.

On January 27, 1969 the Board approved the establishment of an " experimental four-year college of professional studies offering both career and transfer associate degrees and the baccalaureate degree, to be located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, said college to be established in place of a previously approved but not started new Community College VII, and further directed that the City University Master Plan be amended accordingly.

" The College was officially established on July 30, 1970 when Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller signed the legislation approving the " establishment of an experimental four-year college of professional studies offering both career and transfer associate degrees and the baccalaureate degree ..." Finally, on September 28, 1970 the Board of Higher Education approved the recommendation from the College ’ s Community Council that the name of the college be Medgar Evers College, in honor of the martyred civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers ( 1925 – 1963 ).

Fulfilling a campaign promise, he helped transform Northern Kentucky Community College into Northern Kentucky State College ( which later became Northern Kentucky University ), a four-year institution and member of the state university system.

A four-year course of spiritual study begins with a term of Essentials of a Friends Community in the student's first year, followed by two terms of Faith Traditions, an in-depth World Religions course.

OSU-Tulsa works in conjunction with the main OSU campus and Tulsa Community College to provide Freshman and Sophomore level courses, enabling students to complete a four-year undergraduate course of study.

The MESA Community College Program ( MCCP ) provides academic preparation for community college students who are interested in transferring to four-year institutions to attain baccalaureate degrees in STEM fields.

The mission at Howard Community College is to provide pathways for success to anyone with an educational goal including: two-year college degrees, starting a four-year degree at HCC and transferring elsewhere, entering a new career, sharpening job skills, or exploring personal interests.

In 1997, the University of Arkansas system absorbed Gateway, and a few months later re-christened it as the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville ( UACCB ), offering both vocational courses as well as courses towards associates degrees and college courses toward " core " requirements at four-year schools.
