The story involves Chaplin and Chester Conklin working as waiters at a restaurant where the cooks go on strike.

Groff Conklin described the original edition of the novel as " a light, simple, fast-moving and often richly imaginative fantasy.

Groff Conklin, reviewing the American edition, characterized the novel as " sheer melodrama, sure, but melodrama spiced with wit with pungent commentary on human foibles.

Reviewing the Gnome Press edition, Groff Conklin found the novel to have " real merit " considered as an imaginative work, but characterized Howard's writing as " only average laden with bombast.

Critic Groff Conklin reviewed the collection for Galaxy Science Fiction in 1954 ; although generally favorable, the review claimed that Sheckley was " still trying to discover his own particular bent " and that he " hasn't quite found his footing.

The interplay between the cast -- blustery Conklin, nebbishy Denton, accommodating Harriet, absentminded Mrs. Davis, clueless Boynton, scheming Miss Enright -- also received positive reviews.

Rounding out Waters ' ten assignments was a single comedy, the W. C. Fields-Chester Conklin vehicle, Two Flaming Youths, which he also produced.

In between, he had a significant role as ZaSu Pitts ' father in director Erich von Stroheim's acclaimed 1924 MGM production, Greed, although the part was cut from the film and the footage is now lost, and in 1928 in the Christie Film Company version of Tillie's Punctured Romance with W. C. Fields ( which had nothing to do with the 1914 Chaplin version, which Conklin had also appeared in, aside from the title ).

Conklin also appeared in films which appealed to nostalgia for the silent era, such as Hollywood Cavalcade ( 1939 ) and The Perils of Pauline ( 1947 ).

Four years later, Conklin and Burton Rascoe published The Smart Set Anthology ( 1934, reissued as The Bachelor's Companion in 1944 ), the first collection of stories from that important literary magazine.

On March 1, 2007 Conklin published Hawaiian Apartheid: Racial Separatism and Ethnic Nationalism in the Aloha State.
