The later construction of the Royal Victoria Dock necessitated a swing-bridge on the original route south of Canning Town which was rerouted in 1850 via Custom House and the Connaught Tunnel.

They were named after the Selkirk range of mountains that they crossed, the ( railway ) summit of which was located just inside the western portal of the Connaught Tunnel beneath Rogers Pass.

The Laggan Subdivision covered the Eastern portion of their assigned territory and included the Field Hill and the famous Spiral Tunnels while the Western portion of their primary, assigned territory consisted of the Mountain Subdivision which covered the remaining and included the famous Rogers Pass, the Connaught Tunnel and Stoney Creek Bridge.

To avoid the avalanches the Connaught Tunnel was completed under Rogers Pass in 1916.

Difficult grades exist in both directions from Field, east through the Spiral Tunnels 137 miles to Calgary, Alberta ; and 126 miles ( 203 km ) west to Revelstoke, British Columbia through Rogers Pass and the Connaught Tunnel, and where the modern Mount Macdonald Tunnel was opened in 1989.

The Ottertail revision of 1902 and the five-mile ( 26, 518 feet or 8. 08 km ) long double track Connaught Tunnel of 1916 were other improvements made to the original line.

Connaught Tunnel

In the late 1980s, the Mount Macdonald Tunnel was built to supplement the Connaught Tunnel and to lessen the grade on the eastern approach to the pass.

Trains now predominantly travel east through the Connaught Tunnel and west through the Mount Macdonald Tunnel.

It was the longest tunnel in North America until the completion of the Connaught Tunnel under Rogers Pass in British Columbia in 1916, and remains the longest active transportation tunnel east of the Rocky Mountains.

The remaining station buildings and platforms were demolished in 2012 as part of the construction of Crossrail by Vinci, the contractor responsible for the reconditioning of Connaught Tunnel.

The Mount Macdonald Tunnel supplements the nearby Connaught Tunnel that the CPR opened in 1916.

The Mount Macdonald Tunnel is 91 m lower than the Connaught Tunnel.

On the west side of the pass, the Mount Macdonald Tunnel track rejoins the older line 5. 5 km west of the Connaught Tunnel.

The reduction in the westbound ruling grades allowed the Canadian Pacific Railway to remove the pusher locomotives that had been required on the Connaught Tunnel route.

Trains now predominantly travel east through the Connaught Tunnel and west through the Mount Macdonald Tunnel.

The LSE's campus went through a renewal under former Director Anthony Giddens ( 1996 – 2003 ), with the redevelopment of Connaught and Clement Houses on the Aldwych, and the purchase of buildings including the George IV public house, which had been nestled amongst the campus for decades, but is now owned by LSE.

In order to link Central with the nearby Hong Kong Station, southern terminus of the new Tung Chung Line and the Airport Express, a passageway has been built under Connaught Road to connect the two stations.

The tunnels, which cross under Connaught Road Central, are equipped with moving walkways.

He is called by the annalist of Loch Cé " a haughty and proud lord ," who reduced many under his yoke, and by the Four Masters " the most illustrious of the English in Connaught.

Shortly after his return to Russia, three British newspapers announced on 24 September 1906 that Michael was to marry Princess Patricia of Connaught, but neither he nor Patricia knew anything about it.

He was in 1904 appointed as governor general by King Edward VII, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Arthur Balfour, to replace the Earl of Minto as viceroy and occupied that post until succeeded by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, in 1911.

He was, in 1916, appointed as governor general by King George V, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom H. H. Asquith, to replace Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, as viceroy, and occupied that post until succeeded by the Lord Byng of Vimy in 1921.

It was unvelield by HRH Prince Athur of Connaught on 1st August 1923.

The forts built on the island were Fort Siloso, Fort Serapong, Fort Connaught and the Mount Imbiah Battery.

Prior to the 1922 – 23 season, the NHL would hold its governors meeting at the Royal Connaught Hotel on King Street, where visiting teams stayed as well.

The Prince was baptised in the Private Chapel of Buckingham Palace on 20 November 1935 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Lang and his godparents were: King George V and Queen Mary ( his paternal grandparents ); the Prince of Wales ( his paternal uncle ); the Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood ( his paternal aunt ); the Duke of Connaught ( his great-granduncle, whose son, Prince Arthur of Connaught, stood proxy ); the Duchess of Argyll ( his great-grandaunt ); and the Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark ( his maternal grandfather ).

He was in 1927 appointed as South Africa's governor general by George V, King of the United Kingdom, on the recommendation of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Stanley Baldwin, to replace Prince Arthur of Connaught as viceroy, and he occupied the post until succeeded by the Earl of Clarendon in 1930.

He succeeded his grandfather as Duke of Connaught and Earl of Sussex in 1942 and died in Ottawa " on active service " in 1943 in unusual circumstances.

When a developer approached Four Seasons about building a hotel in London, Sharp argued that the hotel should compete with the city's old-world, elite hotels, such as Claridge's and The Connaught, which he felt treated customers based on their social class.

Made from Portland stone, from the Isle of Portland in Dorset, the foundation stone was laid by HRH The Prince of Wales on 12 June 1923 and it was opened by Prince Arthur of Connaught on 4 July 1925 to a crowd of 30, 000.

In the late 1820s Robert Acton and his family arrived from West Connaught, Ireland and settled on Lot 16, Concession 3.

A similar durbar was held on 1 January 1903 to celebrate the accession of Edward VII, who was represented by his brother the Duke of Connaught.

He succeeded as George III on 25 October 1760, and created William Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh and Earl of Connaught on 19 November 1764.
